Ander Herrera has put himself in the spotlight after emotionally walking out on an interview with Manchester United. The Spain international was a popular figure during his five years at Old Trafford. However, he was devastated when he was forced to leave the club back in the summer transfer window of 2019…

Herrera joined Manchester United from Athletic Bilbao back in the summer transfer window of 2014, having come close to moving to Old Trafford the previous year.

And the Spain international would go on to establish himself at Old Trafford, helping the club win the FA Cup, Europa League and EFL Cup throughout his stint.

Herrera was, however, forced to leave United in the summer of 2019 after they’d failed to give him a sufficient offer for a new contract.

He’s now going viral for crying during an interview with club media, where he recalled his departure.

And, in 2020, Herrera opened up on his exit for the first time – insisting he would give Ed Woodward a ‘hug’ and didn’t hold a grudge against the former United supremo over the way his departure was handled.

Man Utd transfers: Ten Hag is going to sign his own Haaland

“My intention was not to leave the club and I was happy there- as happy as I am now here,” he told the Daily Telegraph that year.

“It was not a secret. I was negotiating for more than one year but I expected more from the board after my third season at the club when I was player of the year.

“They didn’t come to me that summer; they didn’t even call me. And that was very painful for me because I had a feeling that I was giving everything.

“In saying that I have a huge respect for [executive vice-chairman] Ed Woodward, a huge respect for the board.

“They have always treated me fantastically. I know they want the best for Manchester United but in football, in life and in every company in the world sometimes you don’t think the same way and I respect that.

“If I see Ed I will give him a hug. We just had different opinions about Manchester United and, in my opinion, what the club should have done.

“I want to make sure everyone understands there is nothing personal at all. That’s life.

“But it’s true – after the third season when I was player of the year, when I had the respect and the love from the fans, I didn’t feel that love from the club.”

Now, in his most-recent interview with United, Herrera has admitted he was heartbroken at having to go.

“To leave, it was difficult because six months before, five months before, I was expecting that offer for me to stay,” he said.

“I don’t want to, it’s not the moment to talk bad about anyone and I am not going to do it, but after my third season with the club I expected a little bit more from the club at that time.

“I got the Player of the Year award by the fans and the club didn’t call me that summer to sign a new contract, and they did with other players. That was painful for me, honestly.

“I think I deserved it and they didn’t do it.

“After, the conditions changed because I was not happy with that little moment with the club.

“People go through the club but the club and the badge stays the same, so I could never say one bad word about the club because I am so, so thankful.

“But that was a little bit painful. At the end of the third season, three titles, Player of the Year, and they didn’t call me in the summer so I was feeling a bit down.

“And after, they called me when I had one year left on the contract and the things, they were not right for me.

“I fight for the club until the last day, no problem at all, I respected my contract until the last day.

“But they didn’t come at the right moment in my opinion, and in my agent’s opinion, and in my family’s opinion as well.”

Herrera left United for Paris Saint-Germain in 2020.

He’s currently spending the season back in Spain with Athletic Bilbao, with the midfielder making six appearances so far.
