Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Inter Milan star Lautaro Martinez in the January transfer window, with Erik ten Hag still keen to bring in a striker. The Serie A side certainly won’t be in any rush to part ways with the Argentine, meaning the Red Devils may need to think outside of the box with their offer.
Over the summer, Ten Hag was granted plenty of spending power by United to rejig his changing room. However, with Cristiano Ronaldo still pleading to be sold, the former Ajax boss will certainly be in the market for reinforcements once more.
Earlier this season, the higher powers at United suggested that the club had spent more than they anticipated over the summer, fuelling speculation that Ten Hag will need to offload players before he is able to bring fresh faces to the club. La Gazzetta Dello Sport reports that United have held talks with the agent of Inter Milan star Martinez recently, in hope of securing his signature in January.
Though the Red Devils boss could propose a swap deal to sign Martinez if he views the Argentina international as the ideal No 9. Express Sport looks at three players United could offer Inter for the versatile forward…
Cristiano Ronaldo
If United are going to be in the market for a Ronaldo replacement, they could be tempted to make use of the 37-year-old in negotiations with Inter. The Portugal international shone in the Serie A previously with Juventus and a return to the league could see him find his form and prove that he is not reaching the end of his career.
Ronaldo’s wages will certainly be an issue but reports that United have not been approached due to financial issues could prompt the former Real Madrid star to lower his wage demands. The striker’s contract expires at the end of the season meaning that United will lose him for free, so a swap deal for a long-term replacement could prove smart.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka
Since joining the club from Crystal Palace, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has failed to live up to the expectations that his £50million price tag provided. The right-back remains surplus to requirements at the Theatre of Dreams and was only retained over the summer as it was felt the club did not have enough time to bring in an apt replacement.
Diogo Dalot looks irreplaceable at United and thus Ten Hag may feel that using Wan-Bissaka as a makeweight in talks could be more effective than selling him. Inter are expecting a high level of interest in Denzel Dumfries over the summer, including from Chelsea, and thus may need to sign a right-back. A deal of this nature could please all parties.
Donny van de Beek
Why United signed Donny van de Beek remains an unsolved mystery, and even reuniting with his former manager has not seen him become a regular in the Premier League. Thus, the time may be right for the Netherlands international to request to be offloaded permanently – following his underwhelming loan at Everton last season.
The former Ajax star has shown glimpses of potential during his time in England and Inter may feel that a complete change of surroundings will allow him to get his career back on track. Van de Beek’s transfer value is hardly substantial due to his lack of opportunities over the past few years, though he could act as a sweetener in negotiations.
