Man Utd ‘have one obstacle left’ with Mason Mount transfer deal edging closer
Mason Mount dresses up as Spiderman with a football
Manchester United have just one obstacle left to overcome as they look to sign Mason Mount from Chelsea in this summer’s transfer window, according to reports. The England international is widely expected to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season, with the Blues struggling to tie their homegrown star down to a new contract. However, the Red Devils are currently reluctant to pay £55million – and that seems to be holding up a potential deal.
News of United’s strong interest in Mount broke earlier in the week.
Erik ten Hag sees the Chelsea star as the ideal player for his system, with the Dutchman eyeing another midfielder to challenge the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen.
And The Independent say an ‘agreement on a price is now the only obstacle to his move to Old Trafford’.
The midfielder is said to be happy to leave Chelsea for Ten Hag’s side, with the United boss apparently having the ‘clearest idea’ for the 24-year-old.
Yet despite the Red Devils’ determination to sign Mount, they’re currently reluctant to pay the £55m their rivals are looking for.
Man Utd takeover: Garnacho could be set for awkward reunion after Sheikh Jassim approval
That’s said to be down to the fact their budget is open to change due to a potential takeover, with Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe battling to secure power.
And there’s a feeling the deal will eventually get down, with United poised to make the England international their first signing of the summer.
Ten Hag’s team can offer Mount a platform to play in the Champions League, having sealed a return to that competition with a stirring 4-1 win over Chelsea on Thursday night.
Casemiro, Anthony Martial, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford were all on target on a straightforward night at Old Trafford.
Mount has already won the competition once, having starred as Chelsea won club football’s ultimate prize back in 2021.

And he’d be expected to play a key role at United if, as expected, his transfer goes ahead this summer.
While Chelsea would love for their homegrown star to stay and sign a new contract, they’re not against selling to the Red Devils – at least, if history is anything to go by.
United have signed two players from the Blues over the past decade, with Juan Mata the first to arrive in January 2014.
The Spain international crossed the divide after being deemed surplus to requirements by Jose Mourinho, who was Chelsea manager at the time.
Mata wouldn’t always be a regular at United.

However, the veteran still helped the club win three trophies before leaving on a free transfer for Turkish side Galatasaray 12 months ago.
Then, in 2017, United signed Nemanja Matic from Chelsea.
He wouldn’t win a trophy at Old Trafford but still did well enough under managers such as Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.
Matic currently plays for Roma and has helped the Serie A giants make this year’s Europa League final, with Sevilla the only side standing in the way of another trophy.
Meanwhile, regarding Mount, United hero Paul Scholes has admitted he’s unsure about a deal for the Chelsea star.
“Look, I like Mason Mount… does he do enough?” Scholes told Premier League Productions.
“I thought when he first came onto the scene, ‘have got a new Frank Lampard?’. I know we talked before about not comparing players to these types.
“But I expected him to score goals, a lot more goals, in big games, to win you games, he hasn’t really kicked on from there.
“I think a change of club might not be a bad thing for him.”
