Manchester United are back in crisis mode. The Red Devils have struggled to adjust to life under Ralf Rangnick, winning just three of his first six matches since replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. So, with so many players eager to leave Old Trafford, Express Sport will now take a look at those the club should consider cutting loose due to the fact they’re nowhere near good enough.

Eric Bailly

Eric Bailly had such promise when he signed for Villarreal during Jose Mourinho’s time at the club.

But injuries have long been a problem, as well as the fact there’s always an error in his game.

Bailly wants out and, given he’s spent more time on the sidelines than on the pitch, it’s time to get rid.

Phil Jones

Phil Jones was a shining light in United’s 1-0 defeat to Wolves on Monday.

Yet it’s too little, too late when it comes to the England international saving his Old Trafford career.

After a decade, Jones isn’t going to come good now. A move to Benfica would suit the player, who deserves regular football due to how hard he’s worked to save his career.

Paul Pogba

When you sign a midfielder for £89million, you expect them to sprint. And to win titles.

Paul Pogba does neither. When he plays he’s a defensive calamity, rarely busting a gut no matter the opposition.

He’s more of a hindrance, than a help. A nice person behind the scenes, that doesn’t make him worthy of a new contract.

Juan Mata

Juan Mata was once good enough to be at United.

He was impressive under Louis van Gaal, in particular, as well as having his moments under David Moyes.

Yet it’s been years since Mata operated at that level and the decision to give the Spaniard two contract extensions has horrendously backfired.

Anthony Martial

Sure, there are some days where Anthony Martial looks unplayable.

But they’ve been far too few and far between, with the France international scoring just eight times over the past 18 months.

When you look back at the great No 9s of the past, such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Andy Cole and Dimitar Berbatov, Martial pales in comparison.

Jesse Lingard

Like Martial, Jesse Lingard is another player who can be brilliant on his day.

However, his best form in the last three years came when he was on loan at West Ham last season – where he scored nine goals under David Moyes.

Lingard enjoys scoring against Arsenal but he’s never fulfilled his potential. He’s not done enough to win round Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or Ralf Rangnick, era.

Fred

There could yet be a true player in Fred.

He’s fantastic for Brazil and can be useful for United. When compared with other players, however, he simply isn’t up to scratch.

Fred is good one minute and bad the next. United need somebody consistent in midfield if they’re to ever solve their issues in that department.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

When United signed Aaron Wan-Bissaka, they knew his potential needed nurturing.

Nearly three years on, it’s fair to say his signing from Crystal Palace is yet to work out.

Wan-Bissaka’s defensive prowess has dropped off alarmingly and he offers precious little going forward. Diogo Dalot is better, and that’s saying something given how he’s far better going forward than he is at tracking back.

Nemanja Matic

There came a time where Nemanja Matic was one of the best holding midfielders in world football.

But those days are long gone.

Matic is a useful squad player but his best days are behind him. His experience is valuable yet if United are to win the big trophies, the Serbia international can’t start every game.

The question mark players

There are several players who might be good enough for United. Might, being the key word.

Luke Shaw has had a terrible season but showed last year that, when confidence, he can be the best England has to offer.

Donny van de Beek was majestic at Ajax and needs more opportunities if he’s to avoid being branded a flop.

And Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho have the talent to be two of the best players on the planet. When the mood suits them, of course.
