Manchester United are cautiously optimistic when it comes to signing Borussia Dortmund youngster Jude Bellingham, according to reports. And despite the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, they’re also eyeing Erling Haaland. The Red Devils have strengthened their squad in recent windows but, despite that, are still on the lookout for more reinforcements.

Manchester United signed Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Ronaldo back in the summer.

But, despite that, they’re still hoping to make signings in midfield and attack when the transfer window reopens next summer.

For the former area, it’s Bellingham they’re eyeing.

They had initially hoped to land the England international last year but, in the end, missed out to Dortmund instead.

Since then he’s set the Westfalenstadion alight, establishing himself as one of the best young players in world football.

And United, according to the Independent, are ‘cautiously optimistic’ when it comes to snapping up the 18-year-old.

Liverpool and Chelsea have also been linked, too, but it’s the Red Devils who currently appear to be frontrunners.

United showed Bellingham around their Carrington training complex last year, with the midfielder meeting Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Sir Alex Ferguson during that visit.

However, in the end, they missed out due to Dortmund’s offering of regular first-team football.

Bellingham later explained his decision to reject United, saying: “To be fair, it was a decision that was quite easy in the end.

“I think if you look at Dortmund’s track record with young players and the way they develop them, it was the obvious answer.

“Obviously at the time it’s hard to see it like that because you’ve got so many other options.

“But my strength of character, I’d probably say it comes from my parents and stuff.

“In terms of the decision I made, I had all their support throughout the whole way so I was quite comfortable in making it.”

And the youngster isn’t the only Dortmund player United admire.

They’re also keen on Haaland, who will be available for £66million next year due to a clause in his contract.

But any deal won’t be straightforward, with the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona all keen as well.

Solskjaer revealed earlier this year that he was ‘still in touch’ with Haaland.

“When you have had kids and players through as a coach, you follow them and I keep in touch with Erling,” he said.

“It’s great to see him become the player he has become and [how] he works to improve all the time.

“He’s a Dortmund player – we just wish him well there and let’s see what life will bring later on.

“You know I can’t speak about Erling because he’s at Borussia Dortmund, and it’s disrespectful to talk too much about it, apart from that I know him and I speak to him.

“Who wasn’t interested in him a year ago? Everybody would say you would take the best players in the world and Erling is a top player.”
