Man Utd have already signed a Greenwood replacement as situation takes new turn

Attempted rape charge against Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood dropped

If Mason Greenwood does end up returning to the fold at Manchester United, it’ll be interesting to see what happens with Antony. The Brazil international was effectively signed as a replacement for the 21-year-old 12 months ago. However, amid suggestions Erik ten Hag is against selling Greenwood, the two could yet end up battling for a starting berth.

Greenwood had charges dropped against him in February, meaning the United striker is now free to resume his career.

The Red Devils confirmed months ago they were conducting their own investigation into the 21-year-old.

And, on Thursday, the Manchester Evening News claimed United were considering sending Greenwood out on loan.

Ten Hag, it was claimed, is against the idea of selling the forward – whose last appearance for the club was in a 1-0 victory over West Ham in January 2022.

Greenwood has been spotted training recently, with the United forward eager to get back out onto the pitch.

And if he is to be given a second chance, it’ll be intriguing to see what happens with Antony.

United, in signing the Brazil international 12 months ago, effectively replaced Greenwood.

Both players are left-footed forwards capable of playing on the right, even if Greenwood’s preferred position was always down the middle.

When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer used the England star as a winger, however, he often looked a potent threat.

And if Greenwood returns from a successful loan spell, United may yet decide to use him in that position once again.

Antony cost a huge £86million upon arriving from Ajax 12 months ago.

But he’s yet to live up to expectations so far, even if he’s had some positive moments in a red shirt in the time since.

Antony won’t want to play second fiddle to anyone.

Yet he may have no choice but to accept some added competition in a year’s time if Greenwood does temporarily depart.

Of course, until United release a statement, nothing is set in stone.

But the latest murmurings suggest the Red Devils are reluctant to lose a player who was once considered as being worth £100m.

Greenwood has kept a low profile over the past 18 months.

But a source close to the player recently told The Sun he was eager for United to conclude their own investigation so he can make the next decision on his future.

“He firmly believes he is an innocent man and is very frustrated he’s not been able to play,” said the insider.

“He understands that the club have had to carry out an investigation, but he feels like his career is slipping by.

“He and his team have made clear to United that they now want to know what is happening.

“They have basically said, ‘sack him or back him’.

“If they want to reintegrate him, then do so. If they want to sell him, then tell him.

“And if they want to loan him out, then tell them so his team can find the best club for him.”
