Man Utd handed huge boost as Sergio Reguilon hints at Copenhagen return

Casemiro returns to Man Utd training ahead of Copenhagen clash

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is in line for a significant boost in Tuesday’s must-win Champions League clash against FC Copenhagen. United are rock bottom of Group A after tasting defeat in their opening two games, but Ten Hag’s defensive injury crisis looks to have slightly soothed.

The Red Devils haven’t had a natural left-back available for selection in their last five outings, leaving Sofyan Amrabat and Victor Lindelof to cover.

Tyrell Malacia suffered a problem shortly before United flew out for their pre-season tour of the United States and has only just returned to individual training.

Meanwhile, Luke Shaw featured and performed well in United’s opening two games of the campaign against Wolves and Tottenham Hotspur.

However, Ten Hag’s first-choice option suffered a long-term injury that is expected to leave him sidelined until after the November international break.

It prompted United to move fast in the transfer window, signing Spurs’ Sergio Reguilon on a season-long loan on deadline day.

The Spaniard made a promising start to life at Old Trafford, starting three successive games against Brighton and Hove Albion, Bayern Munich and Burnley.

But he then picked up an issue himself, adding to Ten Hag’s early-season injury woes and leaving the Dutchman with a makeshift backline.

Reguilon, though, looks ready to return to action when Copenhagen visit Old Trafford on Tuesday evening in an almighty boost.

The 26-year-old returned to training before Saturday’s 2-1 win at Sheffield United but wasn’t in the travelling squad.

But in the hours leading up to the Copenhagen clash, Reguilon posted a photo of his training session with the caption: “Champions League is back.”

He followed it up with a match preview graphic, which players tend to post on social media to tell their fans they will be involved in that match.

Reguilon might not start against the Danish champions, with Ten Hag keen to avoid a setback ahead of a daunting fixture list.

But if he’s ready to go with a week of training under his belt, Reguilon could return to the team in place of Jonny Evans, Harry Maguire or Victor Lindelof.

With Raphael Varane also expected to step back into the starting lineup after featuring off the bench at Bramall Lane, Ten Hag will feel he has a strong back four at his disposal.

The presence of an all-out left-back would almost certainly act as a positive offensively, too, after Rasmus Hojlund’s recent lack of service.
