Man Utd handed chance to sign cheaper Andre Onana alternative due to FFP
Manchester United could be handed the chance to sign Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa before June 30 as the Portuguese side need to raise just under £45million before they submit their 2022/23 financial records to remain in compliance with FFP. The 23-year-old shot-stopper is among a cluster of targets on Erik ten Hag’s summer shortlist although the Red Devils are believed to favour a swoop for Inter Milan’s Andre Onana.
Onana was a staple of Ten Hag’s former Ajax side and the Cameroonian’s stock has since skyrocketed following his impressive return from a hefty ban.
The Inter No 1 caught the eye in the Champions League final with his incisive passing but the Italian giants are demanding a mega fee worth upwards of £70m for the 27-year-old.
Chelsea are also interested but it’s believed both Premier League clubs could now be priced out of a deal.
That’s where Costa comes into play and Portuguese newspaper A Bola are reporting that Porto are frantically trying to raise cash within the next eight days to balance their books.

Although Porto would ideally like to keep Costa, who is considered indispensable, his departure could help their generate funds quickly.
United have already previously held loose discussions over a move for the Portugal international but the Red Devils are yet to formalise their interest.
Costa recently spoke out on rumours linking him to Old Trafford and reaffirmed his commitment to Porto, where he has a long-term contract.
He said: “That’s the internet. It is a happiness and an honour to play for my favourite club. What they say is what they say, there is nothing concrete, I have a contract until 2027 and I hope to continue, let’s see.”

The United hierarchy are believed to be targeting a new goalkeeper – which is among their summer priorities – after losing faith in De Gea, who could yet extend his stay and sign a new deal at Old Trafford.
The Spaniard has been the subject of interest from Saudi Arabia and his future currently remains up in the air with his contract due to expire at the end of the month.
Ten Hag has previously laid on record that he would like to keep De Gea but the Spain international has no interest in being demoted to the club’s No 2 goalkeeper.
The Dutchman recently said: “I will not say he’ll always be my No 1 because in a club like Man United there must be competition in all positions.
“You can’t do it with 11 players. It is impossible. You need double positions.”
United have also considered a move for Brentford’s David Raya but his £40m price tag is currently considered excessive.
Dean Henderson is still the subject of strong interest from Nottingham Forest following his loan spell at the City Ground last season.
Forest are prepared to sign the England international on a permanent deal but they are now waiting for clarity on De Gea’s future.
