Man Utd goalkeeper leaves club just days after seriously injuring Wrexham hero

Manchester United close in on a striker

Manchester United youngster Nathan Bishop has agreed a deal to join Championship team Sunderland just days after injuring Wrexham forward Paul Mullin. The 23-year-old has penned a three-year deal, which comes weeks after he agreed a one-year extension to stay with the Premier League team.

Bishop has joined the Black Cats for an undisclosed fee which sees him leave Erik ten Hag’s team on a permanent deal. Speaking after signing the deal, the goalkeeper revealed his intentions behind the move to England’s North East.

“You see the direction that the Club is going,” he said. “Playing young players and allowing them to express themselves and push on in a great league. I think that is so exciting, so I want to come in and earn the right to play for such a great team and a great club.”

Bishop’s transfer comes after he was granted a place to join Manchester United’s pre-season tour of the USA. The Old Trafford side endured a mixed spell of results, including a 3-1 defeat against Wrexham.

The game against the Welsh club, owned by Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, saw Bishop start between the posts. The youngster was immediately involved in the action when he went to challenge Wrexham striker Mullin for the ball.

Mistiming his tackle he collided with the forward, resulting in a punctured lung. Mullin was quickly taken to a nearby hospital in San Diego where he has since received treatment.

Following the match, Wrexham and former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster expressed his sympathy for Bishop. “I feel so bad for Nathan, he’s absolutely heartbroken,” he said to The Telegraph. I passed Paul’s number onto Nathan so he can get in touch with him but, yeah, he’s absolutely gutted. I feel for the lad.”

Bishop has since apologised to Mullin, tweeting: “Just wanted to share my sincerest apologies to @PMullin7. A complete misjudgement and a genuine accident with 0 malicious intent at all! Wishing you the speediest recovery and hope to see you back scoring goals as soon as possible!”

Following the injury, Mullin has revealed that he has been discharged from the hospital and is on the road to recovery. The 28-year-old has since been invited to remain in the US to recover, and stay with Wrexham’s co-owner Rob McElhenney.

Speaking to Welsh TV channel S4C, the Mythic Quest star said: “He’s okay, I just texted with him this morning,” he said. “He’s in San Diego and he’s going to come up and stay with us for a couple of weeks until he can leave and head back to Wales.”
