Manchester United fans have been reminiscing about Nemanja Vidic after footage of one of his crunching tackles resurfaced on social media.

It has led to comparisons with Harry Maguire, who has been desperately out of form this season and endured taunts from his own supporters.

The latest display saw the Red Devils captain come under fire after a shoddy display against Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday.

United were thrashed 4-1 but the score could have been a lot worse while Maguire was picked out for a series of errors during the match.

The England international’s toils compared to the defence of yesteryear at Old Trafford has left fans strained with Vidic regarded as one of the best defenders the Premier League has ever seen.

In a clip that has gone viral on TikTok and Twitter, United took on Tottenham when a young Kyle Walker came rampaging down the wing looking to latch onto a loose ball.

But Vidic came flying out and made an excellent, thumping tackle that saw the Englishman fly through the air.

And, for good measure, the Red Devils legend came back to give some afters to the Spurs full-back, which fans loved.

The tweet read: “Can you imagine Harry Maguire busting a gut like this. Vidic put Walker into the future with that tackle.”

One fan replied: “By the time Maguire gets across, walker has had a shot, DDG has saved it and the corner has been taken.”

While a third said: “Oh my goodness Vidic was such a warrior and Maguire would love to be half as good as Vida.”

There have been reports that United are looking to bolster their defence in the transfer window amid Maguire’s struggles.

And the former Leicester star has even come under fire from his own teammates with rumours of discontent at his performances in the dressing room.

Despite the drubbing at the hands of City, Maguire picked out the positives and insisted that they matched the Premier League champions for large swathes of the match.

He said: “We played the first half well, like I say, it was probably a 50-50 game in terms of both teams playing aggressive, both teams playing on the front foot.

“But the difference was, when we won the ball back off them in the first half, we were clean, we were good in transitions, we got on the counter-attack, we punished them a lot of times with finding good balls out wide and we kept the ball in their half.

“The second half comes and any time they put us under pressure we gave away the ball far too easily.

“It enabled them to control the game through possession and it made it difficult for ourselves to get up the pitch, and obviously they did what they do in terms of keeping the ball and they did that well in the second half.

“For me the most important thing is that we’ve got to look after the ball better.”
