Man Utd fans upset as Martinez benched at World Cup final for Man City flop

There has been plenty of reaction to the World Cup line-ups, not least from angry Manchester United fans who cannot believe that Lisandro Martinez is not in the team.

Instead, Manchester City flop Nicolas Otamendi has been given a starting position despite hardly impressing during his time at the Etihad. The 34-year-old has since moved to Benfica and has remained a key player in Lionel Scaloni's side.

Martinez signed for the Red Devils in the summer and has proved a great decision from Erik ten Hag, who brought the defender with him from Ajax along with Antony. His fine form has not had much impact on his international chances, though, as he continues to remain sidelined.

And United fans have been left baffled by Scaloni's decision, including this supporter, who said: "Lisandro Martinez is not starting. Argentina will lose today."

Another wrote: "Find it utterly hilarious that Lisandro Martinez still can’t get in the Argentina starting 11 over Romero and Otamendi."

They were not alone as a third tweeted: "No Lisandro Martinez in the starting lineup for #ARG ! How Otamendi gets in ahead of him is BEYOND me. Just flashed through my mind they won't win now. I hope I'm wrong. I would trust Martinez over Otamendi against Giroud."

This fan said: "Why isn't Lisandro Martinez starting at Center back ffs?! What's Scaloni upto, on the biggest night of his life?!"

While another went as far as to say: "Really don’t get how #ARG don’t start Lisandro Martinez. Hoping for a #FRA win now #FIFAWorldCup."

Meanwhile, United are represented in the French team where Raphael Varane starts alongside Dayot Upamecano. The centre-back has been an ever-present in Didier Deschamps' side and has impressed, looking calm and composed throughout the tournament.

France have kept just one clean sheet throughout the World Cup in their 2-0 win over Morocco in the semi-finals. However, their attacking prowess means that they can usually outscore any side with the likes of Mbappe, Olivier Giroud and Antoine Griezmann all in fine form.
