Manchester United fans were overjoyed at the news defender Raphael Varane has retired from international duty with France.

Varane, 29, narrowly missed out on winning a second World Cup for his nation in Qatar last December and after mulling over his future, he's decided to call it a day. He confirmed his decision in an emotional Instagram post, describing representing his country as "one of the greatest honors of my life".

According to Le Parisien, the reasons for the centre-back's decision are he is suffering from physical plus mental wear and tear, and wants to spend more time with his family.

Many have questioned if it's too early, but the Red Devils faithful are made up. One tweeted: "Varane with full focus on United for the rest of his career… What did I do to deserve this man?"

"More Varane for us," a second commented, while a third wrote: "Yesssss no more international football = less injuries."

A fourth said: "He loves us more! Only joking, but what an international career he's had and great that he's looking to prolong his club career by doing this."

"Won the most prestigious competition there is to win in the sport. He’s fully committed to the plan Erik ten Hag has for us," argued a fifth.

And a sixth posted: "29! #MUFC over country – it’s like Sir Alex Ferguson days again – he will be playing for us until he’s 36. I absolutely love him and Casemiro, it just shows how massive United are globally that they left Madrid in their primes to take us back to the top."

Varane, who made 93 appearances for his country, thanked manager Didier Deschamps and the rest of the France set-up before calling on the French public to get behind their new generation of stars.

He wrote: "I will miss these moments with you for sure, but the time has come for the new generation to take over. We have a bunch of talented young players who are ready to take over, who deserve a chance and who need you."
