Man Utd fans make feelings clear on duo to blame for Sevilla draw

Manchester United v Sevilla: Pictures

Manchester United supporters have taken aim at two important Red Devils figures following the 2-2 draw away to Sevilla in the Europa League on Thursday. Erik ten Hag’s outfit appeared to be coasting through to a win after Marcel Sabitzer got a brace in seven minutes during the first half, as the on-loan Austrian put the visitors in a commanding position.

United aimed to see out the victory and bring a big lead back to Old Trafford for the second leg, when they could put the quarter-final tie to bed. However, a disastrous second half saw the Spanish side score twice late on while two United defenders were forced off through injury.

Raphael Varane picked up another issue and was replaced by Harry Maguire, but more concerning was Lisandro Martinez who had to be carried off the pitch by two Sevilla players as he suffered a suspected Achilles injury. Ten Hag revealed after the match that the Argentine’s problem was not his Achilles, but he was not happy with United’s inability to see out the win.

Two own goals in the closing stages from Tyrell Malacia and Maguire ensured that the second leg is going to be a much more difficult battle than perhaps expected. Supporters were frustrated after the full-time whistle, especially taking aim at the captain Maguire for his own goal – while also criticising Ten Hag for his substitutions.

One fan was particularly disappointed that the Dutchman’s second-half changes supposedly allowed Sevilla to push on. On Twitter, @Khuze_Elikhulu wrote: “I can forgive Malacia’s own goal. Maguire?? Shameless but also Ten Hag just sat back and absorbed pressure for the last 30 minutes, it was bound to happen.”

Several supporters defended Ten Hag as some of his substitutions were enforced – as he brought on Maguire alongside the returning Christian Eriksen, Wout Weghorst, Facundo Pellistri and Anthony Elanga. However, some on social media felt that Ten Hag signalled that United were taking their foot off the pedal.

@adekoladammy said: “Who told you Ten Hag can’t be blamed, his terrible subs have been giving fans terrible feelings, why bring on Maguire, Weghorst and Elanga when it’s not as if Man Utd is leading by 7 goals.”

While another of the United faithful attempted to defend their head coach, but had a radical suggestion for replacing Maguire. “Erik ten Hag is the man to blame for the big loss,” @TDon2027 wrote. “Maguire should completely be off the squad not near the bench nor the club. Try bringing back Eric Bailly, at least much better.”

Ten Hag explained after the game that several of his changes were enforced due to injury or possible suspensions. “I had to make them,” the Dutchman claimed. “There was no other way. Rapha was injured, that was the first I had to make. And then Anthony Martial, first start after a long period, so we had to make him on the 60.

“Then Bruno: I got the warning from the refs, he was short before a second booking and the same for Antony. So I had to make the subs, I had no other choice.”
