Manchester United fans are in shock after learning that ex-Red Devils defender Jonny Evans has re-joined the club.

The Northern Irishman, who left Leicester at the end of last season when his contract expired, has joined up with Erik ten Hag's squad on their pre-season tour and will train with the U21s while he mulls over his next move.

It's understood the 36-year-old, who has signed a short-term deal, has looked impressive during training and is even being considered for selection for the club's upcoming first team matches.

Evans emerged form United's academy back in 2006 and ended up making just shy of 200 appearances for the club before moving on to West Brom in 2015. He then joined Leicester in 2018 and remained a mainstay in the side until their relegation in May.

Shocked fans flooded to social media to react to the news, with some saying they can't believe Evans has arrived before incoming goalkeeper Andre Onana.

"No way we've announced Jonny Evans before Onana," one fan tweeted. Another said: "Was half-expecting Onana to be on the list but never expected Jonny freaking Evans haha."

"Jonny Evans to United has got to be the weirdest signing of the summer wow," a third wrote.

Following the departure of David de Gea earlier this month, Evans is now the only player in United's squad with a Premier League winners' medal.

The centre back has three of them in fact, from 2008/09, 2010/11 and 2012/13. He also received a Champions League winners' medal in 2008, despite being on loan at Sunderland when United actually won the competition as he'd made two appearances for Sir Alex Ferguson's side in the group stage.

Evans is also one of the most-capped Northern Irish players in history having played a whopping 102 games for his country.
