Man Utd fans brand Erik ten Hag a ‘lunatic’ after Christian Eriksen’s position

Manchester United fans have laid into the team's new boss after his decision to start Christian Eriksen miles out of position compared to where he has played in the past in their opening match of the season against Brighton.

The Dutch manager lined up his side this afternoon without an out-and-out centre forward, with Cristiano Ronaldo kept on the bench after just 45 minutes of game time in preseason preparations. At first, Sky Sports thought Fernandes would be leading the line but as the game got underway it looked as if Danish debutant, Christian Eriksen, was the one spearheading the side.

The 30-year-old, who signed a three-year deal this summer for the Red Devils, played in the centre of midfield for Brentford last season in his return to English football, and before that he played in midfield for Inter Milan, Spurs and Ajax, but the former Ajax boss thought it would be best to bench legendary goalscorer Ronaldo.

People had their say on social media, with a number of fans kicking off at the odd lineup. @jamiemcnee tweeted: "The arrogance of ten Hag to play Eriksen false 9 with arguably the best goal scorer to play the game sitting on the bench."

@BrownWarGreymon wrote: "To clarify, I love watching Eriksen play CM. Not sure what Ten Hag is thinking playing a man with such elegant passing ability so far forward."

@DiarmaidOMorain said: "Eriksen as a false 9 with McTominay making runs beyond him into the box. Mr ten Hag is a lunatic."

@TBurrows16 made a very good point when he noticed the strange position taken up by Eriksen. He said: "Cristiano Ronaldo benched by Erik ten Hag as he started pre-season last week and is not yet up to speed – 'it will take time'.

"And so in his place is midfielder Christian Eriksen, who has had a disrupted pre-season and only made his debut for #MUFC last week."
