Man Utd failed with ‘swap deal offer’ but Ten Hag is keen again

Ten Hag wants no easing up from Man Utd before end of season

While Manchester United are eyeing the likes of Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen, Lautaro Martinez appears to be another player on their transfer radar. The Inter Milan star has been outstanding this season, scoring 19 goals from 33 Serie A matches. And a move to Old Trafford could be on the cards come the end of the season as a result.

It’s common knowledge United want a new marksman to lead their attack.

Anthony Martial has often struggled for consistency, with the France international also spending large chunks of the season sidelined through injury.

And United aren’t expected to sign Wout Weghorst permanently, with the Netherlands international netting just twice since his January move from Burnley.

Kane and Osimhen are understood to be the Red Devils’ two priority transfer targets, having impressed for Tottenham and Napoli respectively.

But, in recent times, links to Martinez have arisen.

Man Utd transfers: Ten Hag wants another Pogba and it makes sense

It’s obvious why United are such admirers of the Argentina international, who has bagged 19 league goals so far this term.

And it’s not the first time the Red Devils have been linked with Martinez, with rumours arising last summer.

It was claimed back then that United had actually proposed a swap deal to Inter that would have seen Martial move to the San Siro.

However, the Serie A titans turned down that offer – choosing to maintain the services of their No 10 instead.

Fast-forward to now, and United are again considering a move for Martinez as they look to strengthen their attack.

But there’s still no sign Inter will let the 25-year-old depart, especially given his importance to Simone Inzaghi’s side.

Martinez has been driving their pursuit of Champions League football, with Inter currently fourth in the Serie A standings.

And his goals have also been key when it comes to firing Inter towards European glory as well.

Martinez has only scored twice in that competition but he’s still lead the line admirably, shining alongside Romelu Lukaku.

Speaking after the Red Devils’ 2-2 draw with Tottenham last week, meanwhile, Ten Hag confirmed he was hoping to strengthen his attack this summer.

“Everyone knows, it’s not a secret that over the whole season we have had a shortage of No. 9s,” said the Dutchman.

“First, we had the dropout of Ronaldo, then Anthony Martial was often not available, Jadon Sancho was often not available, then you have a shortage of frontline players.

“With fewer players we have to cover many games, so we definitely need players in the frontline who strengthen the squad.”

He added: “Rashford can also play very good as a No 9 and Anthony Martial is a great No 9.

“We have players who can play in that role but definitely we need some offensive players who are really impact players, quality players, who improve the frontline.”

Martinez is expected to start when Inter face off against Roma on Saturday (5pm).

Roma have slipped down the table of late, now sitting seventh with five games left to play.

And whether Inter can boost their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League with victory at the Stadio Olimpico remains to be seen.
