Manchester United could face suspension problems ahead of their crunch Premier League clashes with Tottenham and Chelsea later this month as a whole host of stars have been racking-up yellow cards this season. The Red Devils are fifth in the top-flight table after winning five of their eight matches this term.

United appointed Erik ten Hag as their new boss in the summer following a dismal season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his interim successor Ralf Rangnick. But Ten Hag’s United tenure started in abysmal fashion as his side opened their Premier League campaign with back-to-back defeats to Brighton and Brentford.

The Red Devils managed to quickly turn things around as they went on a four-game winning run that saw them get the better of Liverpool, Southampton, Leicester and Arsenal. But they were then brought back down to earth after being thumped 6-3 by Manchester City.

On Sunday, Cristiano Ronaldo came off the bench to fire his side to a 2-1 victory at Everton. And Ten Hag could now be quietly confident of leading his team into the top four.

United are one place and one point ahead of Newcastle in the Premier League, having played one game fewer than the Magpies. And this weekend’s encounter could prove to be mouthwatering.

With only four teams scoring more top-flight goals than Newcastle this season, the Red Devils could be in for a busy day at the back. But right-back Diogo Dalot, who has started every game this campaign, will have to be careful as he has already picked-up four yellow cards in the Premier League. And if he is cautioned against the Magpies, he will miss his side’s encounter with Tottenham three days later.

Meanwhile, Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire currently have three top-flight yellow cards to their names. So if both men are booked against Newcastle and Tottenham, they will miss United’s trip to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 22.

Fernandes is the more likely of the duo to pick-up two bookings in the next two games as he is yet to miss a second of Premier League action this season. Maguire, on the other hand, has been handed just 10 minutes of top-flight gametime since falling out of favour in the wake of his side’s 4-0 thumping at the hands of Brentford in August.

Ten Hag has already got the better of two of the big-six this season. And he will be sending his players a stark warning to be on their best behaviour in their upcoming clashes as he will want all his top players available against two more Premier League powerhouses.
