Man Utd eye £25m defender, Varane breaks his silence and Rice bid ‘prepared’
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to bolster his defence this summer as the club look to go one step further and win major trophies next season.
United have developed a bout of second-itus this term after finishing runners-up to Man City in the Premier League and losing the Europa League final to Villarreal.
Solskjaer knows he needs reinforcements at the back after watching his side struggle following the loss of captain Harry Maguire against Aston Villa last month.
The Red Devils are in the market for more than one defensive addition, and it’s the backline that takes the focus of today’s Daily Star Sport round-up.
United eye £25million defender
United are desperate to find a long-term partner for Maguire, and now it seems they’re looking towards Fiorentina’s 23-year-old centre-half Nikola Milenkovic.
According to Gazetto dello Sport, the Red Devils are listed among the interest parties for the defender, who has only one-year remaining on his current deal.
Fiorentina have reportedly tried to restart contract negotiations with the towering 6ft 5in defender, but they have so far been ‘without success.’
Milenkovic has made 37 appearances for the Serie A side this season and is a regular at international level with 28 caps for Serbia.
Varane breaks transfer silence

Milenkovic might be a new name for United fans to pore over, but Raphael Varane has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford.
United pondered a move for the Frenchman in 2018 before pulling out and have been monitoring his situation closely ever since.
Varane is out of contract next summer and offered this update on his future ahead of the Euro 2020: “I am focused on my goal, and now is not the time to discuss it. If I have to talk about it, it will be directly with the people concerned.”
Declan Rice bid ‘prepared’
“I don’t agree with the owners that Declan Rice is a £100m footballer. Far, far more than £100m. Far, far more.”
Those were the words of David Moyes before West Ham’s Premier League match with Leeds in March.
Now it seems United are readying a bid for Rice to test the Hammers’ resolve, according to reports in the Evening Standard.
Solskjaer holds a long-term interest in the England midfielder, but with the 22-year-old happy at the London Stadium, it could prove difficult to prise him away.
