Manchester United have reportedly enquired about signing Fleetwood Town’s Josh Feeney this summer. Feeney is set to leave the League One club at the end of June and is not short of offers from sides higher up the food chain.

The defender is captain of England’s Under-16 side and considered one of the brightest young talents in the country.

The 16-year-old scored in England’s 6-0 win over Northern Ireland on Thursday and has been tracked by scouts from all across the United Kingdom.

The Daily Mail reports that Aston Villa are currently considered the favourites for his signature, but United, Celtic, Wolves, Leicester and Leeds are all also interested.

The newspaper states that Feeney will become a free agent at the start of July, with a tribunal set to rule on Fleetwood’s compensation if no deal can be agreed.

Rather than leave for free, it is reported the Lancashire club would be in line for a six-figure sum for their part in his development.

Although he is yet to make his first-team debut, Feeney was promoted to Fleetwood’s first-team group last season, with the team finishing 15th in League One.

Whether he joins Manchester United or not, the club will be busy in the summer transfer window, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer intent on improving his squad depth.

United are in the market for a centre-back to partner Harry Maguire, with Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane, Sevilla’s Jules Kounde and Villarreal’s Pau Torres reportedly on their radar.

The club have also been linked with Argentina international Cristian Romero, who is contracted to Juventus but spent the 2020/21 season on loan with Atalanta.

There is also the case of Jadon Sancho, who could finally be set to leave Borussia Dortmund to join United after last summer’s saga ended in disappointment.

Solskjaer has already promised United will be busy in the off-season as they look to improve on their second-place Premier League finish and Europa League runners-up medal.

“We are second best, but too far behind to threaten those who won. Then we have to strengthen ourselves,” he told Norwegian outlet TV recently.

“Of course, something will happen in the transition window. The world has become very different than 15-16 months ago, but we have to make some moves on the transfer window, but also with the team.

“It is never possible to sit back. You are constantly looking for reinforcements. Football is dynamic, so unexpected things can happen such as injuries, illness, something familiar or that someone wants to move.

“You have to take everything possible into consideration and reflection. I will never sit down and think that ‘now the team is the way I want it to be’, because you always see some other players or other teams doing something you want.”
