Man Utd defender Lisandro Martinez’s injury ‘better than expected’
Lisandro Martinez’s injury is not as bad as initially feared despite the Manchester United defender leaving Old Trafford on crutches, according to reports. There was concern inside the ground on Thursday night that the World Cup winner had snapped his Achilles’ – an injury that would require a substantial and significant lay-off.
Thankfully, those fears have already been squashed by United boss Ten Hag, who has already ruled out that the injury is related to Martinez’s Achilles.
Tyc Sports reporter Gaston Edul, who worked closely with the Argentina national team during the World Cup, has now issued a small update on Martinez’s condition.
He tweeted last night: “Lisandro Martinez is not going to do any more studies today [Thursday]. Tomorrow [Friday] he will know what he has.
“The Achilles tendon was ruled out (good news). He left on crutches. It could be the fifth metatarsal and the outlook is better than expected.”

Martinez was travelling with the ball when he felt something in the back of his ankle and he immediately went to ground in considerable pain.
Speaking in the BT Sport studio, former United midfielder Paul Scholes speculated that the Argentina international had suffered damage to his Achilles because of the way Martinez went down unchallenged.
“It’s difficult for us to assume but it does look like he’s done his Achilles which is a bad one,” the ex-midfielder said.
“I remember actually playing a game with Nicky Butt and he did something very similar. He asked me ‘who kicked me?’

“He felt like somebody went through him and I’m sure Martinez felt the same. I’ve never done the injury myself but when there’s nobody near you like that and something at the back of your ankle and heel goes then you’d have to suspect it was Achilles which is a bad one.”
Martinez was carried off the field by international team-mates Marcos Acuna and Gonzalo Montiel.
Former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel actually believes the pair’s antics helped Sevilla draw level come the end of the game when they netted an injury-time equaliser courtesy of a Harry Maguire own goal.
“It looks like the Sevilla players are nice carrying him off the pitch. No, they wanted him out so they could get going,” the Dane told BBC Radio 5Live.
“By carrying him off, it didn’t stop their momentum, Manchester United used their five subs so they knew he wouldn’t come back.
“It didn’t give the manager or the players the opportunity to have a conversation. United’s players should have stopped that, leave him on the pitch, let them [the medical staff] come on and carry him out and in that period, you regroup.
“This is something the players need to do, that’s a lack of leadership on the pitch. Harry Maguire should have managed that situation. When the manager sees that his player is being carried off by two opposition players, he should have stopped that.”
The £57million summer signing was visibly upset as he left the field with just four minutes plus stoppage time to play.
Ten Hag made it clear it was too early to clarify exactly what is wrong with the 25-year-old centre-back.
“There was no opponent involved,” said Ten Hag. “We’ll have to wait and see.”
