Added pressure has been heaped onto Manchester United’s pursuit of Jadon Sancho after reports surfaced suggesting the England winger could eventually leave Borussia Dortmund for free if not.

A recent report from The Athletic has stated that if Man United cannot see out their proposed deal for Sancho this summer, the player’s preference is to run down his contract with Dortmund and leave for free in 2023.

Of course, United could still be in with a shot of landing him at that point, but it would also invite virtually every major club in Europe to the negotiating table with Barcelona, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Chelsea all having shown interest in the past.

With no fee to pose a financial stumbling block to any proposed deal, The Red Devils would effectively be working on a level playing-field with the rest of Europe’s heavyweights.

Sancho is widely expected to complete a move to Old Trafford this summer, having endured a lengthy transfer saga between the two clubs last summer which resulted in the former Manchester City winger staying in the Bundesliga.

As expected, United have resurfaced but early transfer proceedings between the two clubs do not indicate that the deal is close to completion.

A recent report from Bild revealed that United had submitted their opening bid of £59.5million for the player, some £20m short of the £80m valuation which Dortmund have pinned to the talented 21-year-old.

Dortmund’s notorious ruthlessness in the transfer market, combined with the fact they lowered their asking price from the £100m proposed last summer, means that United’s modest bid is unlikely to go down well in Germany.

Both player and club had hoped that a deal could be worked out before the start of the European Championship, but with kick-off fast approaching that looks increasingly unlikely.

Sancho had a slow start to the season with Dortmund but still managed to register an impressive 20 goal involvements despite missing a large chunk of the campaign with a thigh injury.

The winger hit the ground running when he made the switch from The Etihad to Germany as a 17-year-old, seeing his value skyrocket after a modest £8million move.

It is not all doom and gloom for Manchester City, however, as they are set to receive a 15% sell-on clause for Sancho’s impending transfer, amounting to an extra £12million if Dortmund hold out for their asking price.

Sancho’s future is being hotly debated while he is knee deep in England affairs, preparing for Sunday’s game against Croatia as he hopes to make an impact in the tournament among a talented crop of England wingers.
