Manchester United are confident they can agree personal terms with Raphael Varane if they can reach an agreement with Real Madrid for the centre-back, but Chelsea are a credible threat to their hopes of landing the Frenchman. That’s according to Fabrizio Romano.
United have made Varane their top target after clinching a deal that could rise to £78million to sign Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.
Sancho will sign a lucrative contract until 2026 to move to Old Trafford and will put pen-to-paper and undergo a medical after England’s Euro 2020 campaign is concluded.
The Red Devils’ next priority is to strengthen at centre-back and France’s Varane is their main option with the 28-year-old out of contract at Real Madrid in 12 months’ time.
Varane is keen to leave the Bernabeu after a decade in search of a fresh challenge and United are confident they can agree personal terms on a big-money deal for the centre-half.
But United have yet to make an official opening bid says Romano, and Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea could compete with their Premier League rivals to sign the defender.

Romano said on his official Twitch account: “What I’m told about Varane is that his desire is to try something new, not to extend his contract with Real Madrid and to talk with other clubs. Varane wants to try something new.
“What Real Madrid say is that after the Euros, now, they will talk with the player and offer him a new contract.
“But from Varane’s side, he has a new agency since November because he wants to try something new. You’re not switching agents if you’re not looking for a move.
“If Varane can find a solution, perfect. If they can’t, ‘Let’s see the contract situation’. At the moment this summer Varane is looking for something new.
“Manchester United had contact with Real Madrid. There’s no official bid yet. It’s still an open situation and an open race.
“United have asked for Varane but Real Madrid are waiting to talk with the player and have a final decision. United will try for Varane as top target. We will see what happens.
“They are really convinced personal terms won’t be an issue because they think with the contract side they can do something important to give Varane what he wants.
“But the real issue is final agreement with Real Madrid. They’ve had opening contact but not yet an official bid. We will see what happens in the next weeks.
“I don’t see something happening the next few days because you know when you talk with Real Madrid about a top player like Varane, it will be long. But Varane is one of the top names of the list for United.
“No to Paris Saint-Germain because they are signing Sergio Ramos is nothing crazy happens.

“The only one to keep an eye on is Chelsea because maybe they are signing a new centre-back this summer if they have the opportunity.”
United have Villarreal’s Pau Torres as a back-up option if they cannot broker an agreement for Varane.
And Romano added: “After the Euros Pau Torres will decide about his future. Keep an eye on Manchester United because Pau Torres has always been on the list.
“He has a release clause of £55m (€65m) with Villarreal. Spanish clubs are also looking for centre-backs, Barcelona, Real Madrid.
“If Manchester City sell [Aymeric] Laporte, maybe they will think about signing a new centre-back.”
