Man Utd confirm Erik ten Hag’s assistant coaches including Steve McClaren
Manchester United have confirmed Erik ten Hag's two assistant coaches.
The Dutchman will be joined in the Old Trafford dugout by compatriot Mitchell van der Gaag and former England manager Steve McClaren. The trio were in attendance for United's final game of the season on Sunday (May 22), which ended in a 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.
Ten Hag has worked alongside each of them before. Van der Gaag, 50, spent last season as his right hand man at Ajax, having had a two-year spell working under him as boss of the Eredivisie club's reserve side. During his playing days the former centre-back spent a couple of seasons with Motherwell from 1995-97.
While his coaching career will be a unknown entity for most, McClaren will be making his Red Devils return.
The 61-year-old was assistant manager to Sir Alex Ferguson for United's treble-winning campaign and the following two seasons.
After a five-year spell in charge of then-Premier League side Middlesbrough, McClaren was given his national side's job – a position he lasted just a year in after the infamous 'Wally with a Brolly' match which saw England fail to qualify for Euro 2008.
Who should Ten Hag bring in at United next? Let us know in the comments section.
He headed to the Netherlands and took charge of Twente, appointing Ten Hag as his second-in-command and going on to win the first league title in their history in the 2009/10 season.
A spell at Wolfsburg was followed by a few months at Nottingham Forest before a Twente return, with periods at Derby, Newcastle and Derby again coming before his role at QPR.
McClaren has most recently worked as an advisor to Wayne Rooney at his former club this season. But he will now head back to his Old Trafford to help Ten Hag try and turnaround the club's fortunes.
He offered high praise of the new United boss in a recent interview. "I thought I worked hard until I met Erik.
"His great strength lies not just in his attention to detail and organisation.
"He has a clear philosophy of how he wants to play football, the environment he wants to create."
