Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Brentford on Tuesday is in jeopardy after the Old Trafford club released a statement to confirm that they had made the decision to close down first team training for 24 hours. The Red Devils are currently in discussions with the Premier League to ascertain whether it is safe for their clash with the Bees to go ahead.

The statement on the United website read: “Manchester United can confirm that following PCR test confirmation of yesterday’s positive LFT Covid-19 cases among the first team staff and players, the decision has been taken to close down first team operations at the Carrington Training Complex for 24 hours, to minimise risk of any further infection.

“Individuals who tested positive are isolating per Premier League protocols.

“Given cancellation of training and disruption to the squad, and with the health of players and staff the priority, the club is in discussion with the Premier League whether it is safe for Tuesday’s fixture against Brentford to continue, both from a Covid infection and player preparation perspective.

“Team and staff travel to London will be deferred pending the result of that discussion.”

The coronavirus pandemic continues to hit the Premier League, with Tottenham’s clash with Brighton being canned at the weekend due to a COVID-19 outbreak in the Spurs squad.

And United could be about to fall victim to the same unfortunate circumstances.

The north west team climbed to fifth in the Premier League table on Saturday after they defeated Norwich 1-0.

The Red Devils were made to work for their win as Cristiano Ronaldo reassumed his responsibility as his side’s matchwinner as he stepped-up to score from the penalty spot late on.

The victory means Ralf Rangnick’s side are now just one point off the top four after West Ham were held to a goalless draw by Burnley.

Rangnick has begun his United reign unbeaten after leading his side to a 1-0 Premier League victory over Crystal Palace and a 1-1 Champions League draw with Young Boys before their clash with the Canaries.

And the German will be hoping to break into the Champions League places over the coming weeks as they prepare for a mouthwatering set of festive fixtures should their coronavirus crisis abate.

The 13-times Premier League champions are set to face Brighton, Newcastle and Burnley before the end of the year.

United are a staggering 11 points behind league leaders Manchester City and, if their game with Brentford is called-off, they will probably fall even further adrift.

Club chiefs will, therefore, more than likely view their season as a success as long as Rangnick can guide the team to another Champions League finish come May.
