Manchester United have suffered their latest financial hit as Erik ten Hag holds out for a Cristiano Ronaldo replacement in January, with TeamViewer ending their shirt sponsorship three years early. The Red Devils are set to lose £141million from the ‘mutual decision’, adding to the budget worries as the Glazers cash in on the debt-ridden club.
TeamViewer signed a five-year contract worth £235m (£47m per year) to be United’s main shirt sponsor but announced earlier this year that they wouldn’t be extending their partnership with the Old Trafford giants. The German tech company have received backlash from investors over their sponsorship, and United have now been given the option to buy back the rights.
A statement on Thursday read: “After a period of collaborative, private discussions over the past months, Manchester United and TeamViewer AG have reached a mutually-beneficial agreement under which Manchester United shall have the option to buy back the rights to the club’s shirt front sponsorship.
“Having agreed its partnership with TeamViewer at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, Manchester United will be taking the opportunity to commence a focused sales process for a new shirt front partner in a normalised market.

“Once a new shirt front partner is selected and takes on this role, TeamViewer will continue as a valued member of Manchester United’s suite of global partners, providing Manchester United with remote connectivity solutions, until the end of the original contract term in 2026.
“Since July 2021, TeamViewer has benefitted from unparalleled global exposure as the most talked-about shirt front partner in world football, following the most visible launch for a football club partner in the digital era.
“TeamViewer’s financial commitments to Manchester United remain unchanged whilst they remain the club’s shirt front partner, after which their financial commitments will reflect their status as a global partner. No further announcement will be made until Manchester United has selected a new partner to replace them on the front of its iconic shirt.”
Ten Hag is in limbo over the funds available to him to recruit a Ronaldo replacement in January, with the Glazers’ intention to cash in on United already raining doubt over whether they can afford a marquee buy.
And the club’s latest financial report revealed damning figures featuring shocking losses and rising debt.
United are expected to delve into the loan market to find a cheap solution to the hole Ronaldo will leave after his November release, but they are crying out for a long-term option to boost Ten Hag’s ranks.
The Dutchman will hope new investment is made available next summer amid a rocky start to his reign among the club’s hierarchy.
