Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has broken his silence on Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from the club. The Portugal international had his contract terminated last month by ‘mutual consent’ after he’d criticised the Red Devils in an interview with Piers Morgan. He’s currently a free agent as a result, yet it’s unclear where he’ll go next amid links to Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.

Ronaldo didn’t hold back in his interview with Morgan, making it clear how unhappy he was at United and their slump in the years since Sir Alex Ferguson’s emotional retirement.

He accused the club of making ‘no progress’ since his old boss walked away in 2013, said the Glazers didn’t care about success and also insisted Ten Hag had shown him a lack of respect behind the scenes.

United then terminated Ronaldo’s contract at the end of last month and, until now, Ten Hag hadn’t addressed the matter.

But the Dutchman has shed light on the situation and insists United are looking to the future, rather than focusing on the past.

“He’s gone and it’s the past,” said Ten Hag.

“We are now looking forward and we’re looking to the future.”

It’ll now be interesting to see how United plan to replace Ronaldo, with Ten Hag one attacker down ahead of the second half of the Premier League season.

So far, the Red Devils have been strongly linked with four players.

Joao Felix and Rafael Leao are two of the names in the frame, amid their fine performances for Atletico Madrid and AC Milan respectively, while the club have been linked with Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay as well.

Gakpo was a target for United back in the summer transfer window but, rather than land the Netherlands international, they opted to raid Ajax for Antony instead.
