Man Utd boss Ten Hag let down by four players in Sevilla draw

De Gea gives update on Man Utd future ahead of Sevilla match

Manchester United squandered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Sevilla in Thursday night’s Europa League clash. It was a frustrating night for Erik ten Hag, whose side had been fired ahead following a double from Marcel Sabitzer. Express Sport now takes a look at four players who let the Red Devils down as they threw away a victory that was there for the taking…

Tyrell Malacia

For the most part, Tyrell Malacia hasn’t done much wrong since joining United from Feyenoord back in the summer.

But this was a poor performance from the Netherlands international – and one that will have fans counting down the days until Luke Shaw returns.

Malacia should have done better in the dying stages, misjudging the bounce of the ball to his peril.

Jesus Navas was then able to provide a cross and, in his hurry to make amends, Malacia stuck out a leg.

Unfortunately for him, the ball then cannoned in off the left-back and into the net. All in all, a night to forget.

Man Utd takeover: Man Utd making plans for five players

Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire has been strong for United in recent months.

But his cameo off the bench was a poor one, with the England international’s own goal giving the La Liga giants a hard-earned draw.

Yes, it wasn’t Maguire’s fault. The ball deflected in off the former Leicester star, who could do precious little about it.

While that’s the case, however, he failed to organise his troops as United players lost their heads and eventually caved to the pressure.

Maguire is captain of this side – but his lack of authority was clear to see as Sevilla struck at the death to boost their chances of reaching the semi-finals.

Wout Weghorst

Wout Weghorst worked hard, as he always does, after coming on with roughly 30 minutes to play.

But if he was more ruthless, United may very well have claimed victory and added to their earlier lead.

With the Red Devils 3-0 up, a chance fell to Weghorst in the box. Swivel and strike, and the ball would likely have ended up going into the net.

Yet Weghorst doesn’t think like the best centre-forwards in world football and he decided to pass instead.

Erling Haaland, Victor Osimhen, Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane would have taken the shot themselves. Weghorst, however, just isn’t a player who belongs in that calibre.

Anthony Elanga

United’s attack was formidable during the early stages of the tie.

Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial and Antony all looked bright, with the trio bringing pace and potency to their frontline.

But one player who didn’t impress upon being given a chance was Anthony Elanga.

The Sweden international can be useful but, despite seeing plenty of the ball, he did precious little with it.

United are open to offers for Elanga this summer. Based on this evidence, it’s clear to see why.

Scholes critical of United

Speaking in the BT Sport studio after the result, meanwhile, former United star Paul Scholes criticised the Red Devils for their late collapse.

“The second half was a complete disaster,” he said.

“You never felt Sevilla put loads of pressure on United. United must have felt this was going to be a stroll in the park.

“It looks like Lisandro Martínez has done his Achilles. It doesn’t look great.”

He added: I tell you what, going over there, it’s going to be really difficult. It was a really sloppy second half. If away goals were still around United would have a real battle to get through. But they should still have enough.”
