Man Utd boss Ten Hag fumes with VAR after Tottenham loss and defends Fernandes
Erik ten Hag reviews Man Utd’s 1-0 win against Wolves
Erik ten Hag has fumed at VAR after Manchester United were not awarded a penalty against Tottenham following their 2-0 defeat. Cristian Romero appeared to block a goal-bound strike with his forearm, but it was ruled that Michael Oliver’s on-field decision was not a ‘clear and obvious error’.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, he said: “I liked it first half. It was a very good performance for Manchester United except you have to score. We created good chances, we had a really good press, we had good switches and we had many chances to score a goal. We deserved a penalty, I don’t know why (it wasn’t given). It’s a penalty. Absolutely a penalty. It changes the direction of the ball and he’s blocking, the hand is right above (him).”
The Dutchman also jumped to the defence of his club captain Bruno Fernandes after he squandered a clear opening when heading high and wide from close range in the first half, prior to Tottenham’s brace. Asked whether the Portuguese playmaker finding the back of the net would have changed the game, Ten Hag replied: “Absolutely. It is the meaning of the first goal and changes the game.
“First, we get three bookings which can’t happen, we have to stay focused, they were unnecessary bookings. Then we switch off, have two big chances which were no good, then the start of the second half was definitely no good.”
