Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been told to replicate Sir Alex Ferguson’s brutal approach when it comes to handling Cristiano Ronaldo. It comes after the Portuguese star received criticism for his actions on the sidelines against Swiss side Young Boys in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Ronaldo got United off to a flying start when he opened the scoring after just 13 minutes to net his third goal in his first two games since making his return to Old Trafford.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka was given his marching orders for a nasty tackle before half-time and it was all downhill from there for the Red Devils.

The home side levelled thanks to Nicolas Ngamaleu’s strike midway through the second-half, before Ronaldo was substituted with less than 20 minutes to go for Jesse Lingard – who had a night to forget.

Lingard’s horror backpass gifted the Swiss side the winner when Theoson Siebatcheu slotted past the helpless David de Gea in what proved to be the last kick of the game.

Throughout his time on the bench, Ronaldo could be seen barking orders from the touchline alongside manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

And Arsenal legend Martin Keown believes Solskjaer needs to take on a tougher approach with Ronaldo, like former boss Sir Alex Ferguson did during his tenure.

“He has to know his place, and he needs to take his seat,” Keown said.

“I’m pretty certain Solskjaer will deal with that in the right way, he may even encourage it, but there’s only one manager.

“I don’t think under Sir Alex Ferguson it would’ve got this far, maybe he would have actually mentioned it to him some time sooner.”

Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan agreed with the view that Solskjaer needs to show his authority during the same discussion on Friday.

“You can’t can’t imagine a Manchester United player behaving in that fashion in the technical area if Sir Alex was in situ,” said Jordan.

“This is what happens when you build Ronaldo up to the stage where people are suggesting he’s bigger than Manchester United – which I think is laughable.

“I’m not sure a player being in the technical area is needed, wanted, or part of a look. If looks are part of it, does it illustrate that Solskjaer is in command of the ship? I don’t think he is.

“I think he’s a manager that spends his time making sure players are happy rather than consequencing players when they need to be consequenced.”

The 36-year-old had reportedly been close to joining rivals Manchester City, but Ferguson was allegedly the key figure in convincing Ronaldo to return to United.

Keown did however, also discuss the positive impact that Ronaldo can bring to a team after his fantastic start to life at Old Trafford.

The forward was the star of the show on his debut in the 4-1 win against Newcastle last weekend, where he helped himself to two goals.

“I think you’ve got to look at all the positives that he brings, that dressing room has really just been energised and switched on,” Keown explained.

“This is a winner, a serial winner, what he brings to the football club, it must be a joy every day sharing the dressing room with him.”

Next up for United is a trip to the London Stadium to face West Ham on Sunday.
