Manchester United have not won a match in the Premier League for over a month, and there’s every chance that their winless streak could run into mid-November. The Red Devils lost to Aston Villa and Leicester in their last three as well as drawing with Everton, and the lacklustre performances are putting pressure on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Norwegian boss has had numerous questions raised of him over the last year, and he is yet to settle on a side that can consistently produce results to answer them.

Expectations at Old Trafford were high heading into the new season after Solskjaer’s impressive transfer window.

United signed exciting winger Jadon Sancho for £73million from Borussia Dortmund and secured the Englishman on a five-year deal.

Then 2018 World Cup-winning centre-back Raphael Varane was signed from Real Madrid before the Red Devils granted fans their wish of bringing Cristiano Ronaldo back to the club.

With such depth and quality all over the pitch, United are more than capable of mounting a strong title challenge and winning at least one piece of silverware.

But fans feel that for the club to return to its glory days, Solskjaer needs to be replaced by a more experienced manager that has won trophies at the very top level.

Former Liverpool and Chelsea defender Glen Johnson spoke of how he believes the United boss needs to be smarter when selecting his squad each week rather than trying to cram in all of the team’s attacking talent.

Johnson, in conjunction with William Hill, told the PA News Agency: “Mourinho had it when we were at Chelsea. The team he would leave out on a Saturday was pretty much good enough to finish in the top six.

“If you want to be the manager of a top club you have to be able to make the ruthless decisions. He has to make some big decisions and he has to leave some big names out. Mourinho literally couldn’t care less.

“He knew he had a job and he protected his own job by picking a team to win a certain football match. If you want to work in big clubs that is what you have to do, you have to have that zero-tolerance attitude really.

“Ole comes across as a really nice guy and I can’t imagine he wants to upset many people. That’s fine, he can do it his way, he doesn’t have to upset people, he can deliver the message however he wants. But he has to deliver it at some point.”

“A lot of managers complain they don’t get the backing in terms of the funds they want but Ole has certainly had that. He’s got many players through the door but unfortunately, we’re still saying the same things we’ve been saying for 18 months or so.

“Like any manager, the clock is ticking but when you get in the players you want and things don’t change people will magnify any kind of error.”

Manchester United take on Liverpool this weekend before travelling to north London next week to take on Tottenham.

Solskjaer will then have just three full days to ready his side before travelling to Italy to take on Atalanta in the Champions League before hosting the Manchester derby that weekend.

With such a packed fixture list, the United boss will be relying on his fringe players to step up when called upon, otherwise, he risks key players potentially suffering unnecessary injuries from being overplayed.

If United fail to perform well in all of their coming games and give the fans hope, may that be via a victory against the Reds or an impressive victory over City, then it is only a matter of time before the board also lose faith in Solskjaer.
