Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer proved against Manchester City on Sunday that his team do not have to rely upon Bruno Fernandes, according to former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy. Fernandes scored the opening goal in the 2-0 win at the Etihad, converting a second-minute penalty. Luke Shaw grabbed the other in the second half to end City’s 21-match winning run in all competitions.

Fernandes’ goal was the first United had scored against one of the Premier League’s so-called ‘Big Six’ teams since the 6-1 drubbing by Tottenham last November.

The Portugal international had received some criticism for not turning it on against the top opposition.

Cundy previously stated that if Fernandes was not at his best, then United could not beat the best sides.

However, the pundit admits he has been proven wrong by the performance of Solskjaer’s side on Sunday, claiming Fernandes was not that influential on the win.

Cundy said on talkSPORT: “Ole can do this, the teams that come onto Ole. There are certain teams and certain styles of teams.

“It was a brilliant, counter-attacking display. Brilliant. And Man City couldn’t live with it.

“The goal changed it, that goal early is always nice. United just settled into the game.

“It reminded me a little bit of the game last season, do you remember that? When United won 2-0 then.

“PSG, same sort of thing, teams that come onto you. Leipzig, United love to play that counter.

“The teams United struggle against are Crystal Palace where they sit there and won’t come out, and there’s very little space.

“You’ve got bags of pace, [Daniel] James, [Marcus] Rashford, [Anthony] Martial.

“I was talking about Bruno and about ‘no Bruno, no party’. It wasn’t about Bruno [on Sunday], was it?

“He played alright, but it was about [the whole team]. They looked like the second best team in the country.”

United are second in the table, 11 points off leaders City.

But Solskjaer says he is not even thinking about the potential of catching Pep Guardiola’s side.

“We just take one game at a time; City are too far ahead for us to think we can catch them,” Solskjaer said.

“Last year we caught 15 points up on Leicester, but City are a different proposition.

“Even today they put us under so much pressure you could see we were playing against a very good team.

“When you come away with a 2-0 win and another clean sheet and a performance like this then you are delighted.”
