Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s hopes of a Premier League title bid have been boosted with several Red Devils stars performing well at Euro 2020.
Solskjaer is planning to topple rivals Manchester City at the top of the table after coming runners-up to Pep Guardiola’s side last season.
United were 12 points adrift of the champions, who lifted their third top-flight title in four years.
The competition for the top prize is likely to be fiercer next season, with Liverpool and Chelsea both improving their squads after falling short last term.
Liverpool’s defence of their 2019-20 success was derailed by a devastating injury crisis and a deep drop in form, particularly at Anfield.
Chelsea stormed up the Premier League table after Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard in January. They sensationally lifted the Champions League thanks to a 1-0 victory over Man City in Porto.
But the form of United’s players during Euro 2020 will please Solskjaer. Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and soon-to-be Red Devils star Jadon Sancho all impressed during England’s 4-0 demolition of Ukraine in the quarter-final on Saturday.
Shaw registered two assists, including for United team-mate Maguire’s thumping header that put the Three Lions 2-0 ahead in Rome.
The left-back, whose form has skyrocketed under Solskjaer, also set up United-linked forward Harry Kane to record his third assist of the tournament.
Kane, who wants to leave Tottenham and has Old Trafford as a possible destination, has three goals so far.
Midfielder Paul Pogba was among France’s best players before Les Bleus were surprisingly dumped out by Switzerland in the last-16.
Pogba’s wonderful curling strike against the Swiss in the 3-3 draw is a contender for one of the best goals of the tournament.
The Manchester Evening News has named Shaw, Maguire and Pogba in their team of the tournament.
Solskjaer will be pleased by the performances of his players on international duty but remains keen to make two or three transfers this summer.
Sancho will complete a medical after Euro 2020 ahead of an eye-catching £73million deal.
The Norwegian is believed to also want a defender, with France centre-back Raphael Varane strongly linked.
“Of course, we’re planning as we normally do, that’s an ongoing process,” Solskjaer said after his side defeated Wolves on the final day of the season.
“We’re looking at the squad and I hope we’re going to strengthen with two or three players [who] we definitely need to challenge higher up in the table.
“We’re still too far behind to think it’s just going to come by itself.
“We’ve had a few players on loan that might come back in. There is interest in a few others going out.
“You want to come out of the transfer window strengthened. It’s difficult to say, I can’t see too many outgoings.”
