Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has spoken out ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Atalanta. The Red Devils have been inconsistent under the Norweigan this season. However, victory in Italy will all but seal his side’s passage to the knockout stages of the competition.

While United have been erratic under Solskjaer, his side’s victory over Tottenham has seen the north London giants sack Nuno Espirito Santo today.

And, speaking ahead of his team’s match on Tuesday night, the 48-year-old expressed his sympathy for his fellow manager.

“It is never nice to see men, good men, lose their jobs,” he said.

” I don’t know the situation at Tottenham so can’t comment too much.

“But as a colleague, you are never happy when that happens.”

United beat Tottenham on Saturday with goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani and Marcus Rashford giving them all three points in the capital.

But United, before the game, surprised many fans and pundits alike by going for five at the back.

Solskjaer has now been asked about those tactics and done his best to play down the formation, keeping his cards close to his chest.

“We have players to play many different systems – back three, back five, wide men, wingers,” he said.

“We looked at Tottenham, played that system and it worked.

“I can’t say what we will do tomorrow night.”

“The way we played was more important than the system.”

And he added: “Criticism can make you doubt yourself or you can stand up for yourself. I’ve always enjoyed it, keep it coming. We’ve all got different jobs and it is their jobs to give their opinion.

“I am not here to fight with anyone.”

And the United manager also insisted his side wouldn’t be distracted.

After the match with Atalanta they’re due to lock horns with Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday, in a match that has the makings of a classic.

But, for Solskjaer, Atalanta is the focus.

“We are in good position after winning home games but we need a result away too,” he said.

“All focus on this one, not been thinking about that one (Man City) at all.

“Everyone is focused, worked on recovery since Saturday night. Turnaround is quick but lets see who we can choose from.”
