Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has special rule for Bruno Fernandes during matches

Man Utd: Solskjaer on Fernandes’ practice routine

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has privately told Bruno Fernandes that he is allowed to give the ball away, according to reports. Fernandes was criticised in recent weeks for being too sloppy in possession.

Fernandes has been out of sorts so far this year, and has been criticised on multiple occasions.

Notably, against Liverpool, he was sloppy in possession and gave the ball away numerous times.

He was taken off late in the game after failing to contribute and spraying a series of misplaced passes around the pitch.

While his goalscoring exploits are still there for all to see – as was evident when he fired in a spectacular free-kick against Liverpool late in the game – he has been slightly out of form elsewhere.

But according to ESPN, Solskjaer doesn’t have a problem with Fernandes giving the ball away.

Part of the reason is because he is always energetic in moving to get the ball back and defend.

However, some members of the club’s coaching staff are trying to encourage him to use his energy in a more thoughtful way and stop pressing defenders and chasing the ball.

Earlier this month, Solskjaer insisted he was happy with how the Portuguese ace has worked to recover after playing so much football this season.

He said: “His form’s been very good and he’s just won the Player of the Month award. He’s not tired – no chance.

“He’s one of the players who runs and covers the ground in every single game and is very good at recovering, very good at recharging his batteries.”

And the player himself recently admitted that Solskjaer often has to drag him off the training pitch in order to stop him from over exuding himself.

The Portuguese ace joked that he has been watching Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford and Alex Telles taking set-pieces in order to improve.

“Almost every day [I practice free-kicks], sometimes he [Solskjaer] has to kick me out of training to stop,” Fernandes told MUTV.

“I’m always working on that kind of situation, I like to watch and learn from Juan [Mata].

“He’s a really good specialist and me and Juan stay out a lot, also Rashy, Alex [Telles], Fred, although I think it’s just for fun with Fred.

“Normally long distance is more for Rashy, for me the distance closer to the box is better for me and the kind of shot I have, if Juan or Alex are on the pitch it’s a chance for them on the right side.”
