Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has claimed talks over a new contract for Edinson Cavani ‘will happen in the near future’. The Uruguay international has scored seven times since his arrival on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain back in the summer. And while there’s been talk of a potential move to Boca Juniors, that doesn’t appear likely.
United were condemned by many back in the summer when they signed Cavani, having initially targeted Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho.
However, the Uruguay international has established himself as Solskjaer’s main centre-forward over Anthony Martial.
Cavani has scored a respectable seven goals for the Red Devils so far, proving to be worth the club’s faith in him.
And Solskjaer, speaking ahead of his side’s Premier League showdown with Newcastle on Sunday, has revealed talks over a new contract will happen in the near future – with the player’s contract expiring at the end of the campaign.
“I can only say Edinson has done well,” said Solskjaer.

“I’ve been impressed by him, he’s really gelled in the group and we’ll sit down and speak with him in the near future to see his plans and our plans.
“It’s a good discussion to have. We always speak to the players and with his contract situation at the moment we’re very pleased with what he’s done.”

Cavani missed United’s emphatic 4-0 win over Real Sociedad on Thursday night.
The Red Devils ran riot, with Bruno Fernandes scoring twice and Marcus Rashford and Daniel James also finding the net.
And Solskjaer is unsure over when he, Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek will be available again.
“Paul is out, I don’t know how Scott is and I don’t know how Edinson and Donny will be either. They have a chance, I think,” he said.
“We just have to give them until before training on Saturday, because on Saturday we need to pick a team so we’ll see how they are. Hopefully they can both be available.”
Dean Henderson impressed in the victory in Spain, with the 23-year-old keeping a clean sheet.
Solskjaer has now warned David De Gea that he’s no longer the club’s undisputed No 1, saying: “Of course Dean is in with a shout.
“We’ll pick a team Saturday and Dean was very solid against Sociedad.
“He had good kicking, he should have had an assist for Marcus Rashford, which is another thing we’ve worked on.
“He was clean in his handling, clean with his short passes, produced a good performance and is maturing all the time.
“But I also have a very, very good goalkeeper in David and he saved us against West Brom, so I can’t say to you now [who will start].
“I always speak to the players first before I say who’s not playing, so they’ll know.”
Solskjaer also feels United must up the pressure on City, who currently have a 10-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.
“I don’t think anyone would say they’re not going to go for it,” said Solskjaer, when asked if United were still in the title race.
“We’re going to go for a win in every single game we play, of course we are.
“But, whatever other teams do, City, Liverpool, Leicester, Chelsea, Tottenham, West Ham, whoever, we can’t control.
“We just have to control ourselves. We’re second and, of course, your ambition then is to not end up any lower than that.
“We’re going to have to get a good run together if we’re going to put pressure on City and that should start on Sunday, of course.”
