Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer backed to sign contract extension
Man Utd: Solskjaer previews Liverpool trip in Premier League
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been backed to earn a new contract by club legend Gary Neville. Solskjaer’s side top of the Premier League, three points ahead ofLiverpool going into Sunday’s Anfield showdown against their fierce rivals.
The Red Devils have won eight of their last 10 top-flight games, and a victory over Jurgen Klopp’s side at Anfield would be huge as they aim to end an eight-year title drought.
But Neville feels his former team-mate Solskjaer will be rewarded with a contract extension this summer even if United don’t win the league.
The Norwegian’s current deal runs until the end of next season.
But Neville, who won eight Premier League titles with United, reckons Solskjaer will be given longer as long as he closes the gap to Liverpool and Manchester City this season.

“Ole has to get United closer to City and Liverpool,” the former England right-back told The Mirror.
“United have been miles away for two years. If they are within two or three games of City and Liverpool at the end of the season I would say that’s probably where Ole needs to be.
“That feels really defeatist when United are at the top of the league.
“What I would say is that over 12 months, Manchester United have put together a really consistent run of performances.

“They are hard to beat, they win a lot of away games and although their home record has been a little bit disappointing, there has been massive progression from where they were.
“I would say, at this moment in time, that Ole is on track to extend that contract if he stays around City and Liverpool.”
Premier League done deals: Every confirmed transfer in the top flight
United are top of the table in January for the first time 2013, when Sir Alex Ferguson led them to their 20th and last league title in his final season at the helm.
Since then, David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho have all been sacked.
And Neville says Solskjaer must deliver the Premier League crown sooner rather than later if he is to avoid the same fate.
“Ole has to eventually win the Premier League title – or he won’t live as Manchester United’s manager for a long time,” said Neville.
“Ole knows that. At the end of next season, he will have had three-and-a-half years at the club.

“That’s enough time. Jurgen Klopp had four years to win it at Liverpool, but he also got to a Champions League final.
“So Ole has to get a lot closer this season – and then next season he really has to challenge.”
