Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag missing five players for key Newcastle clash

Ten Hag gives update on Rashford ahead of Newcastle v Man Utd

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is set to be without five key players for Sunday’s Premier League clash with Newcastle. The Red Devils go into the game looking to boost their chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League. Express Sport now takes a look at the players who are primed to miss the showdown.

Donny van de Beek

Donny van de Beek had looked to finally have turned a corner at the beginning of the year.

But the United star then suffered a serious injury in a 3-0 win over Bournemouth that has ruled him out until the end of the campaign.

Ten Hag did, however, recently say the midfielder was showing positive signs as he looks to regain full fitness.

“Of course, the bad news is that he is out for the rest of the season,” said the 53-year-old.

“But the good news is, in the longer-term, his knee will be okay and he will be ready again to play at the highest levels and will be ready for the start of pre-season.”

Man Utd takeover: Man Utd making plans for five players

Christian Eriksen

Another player United have been forced to cope without is Christian Eriksen.

The Denmark international has been a huge hit since arriving on a free transfer from Brentford back in the summer.

But the playmaker has been out of action ever since a 3-1 FA Cup win over Reading following a terrible tackle from Andy Carroll.

The good news is Eriksen is expected to return this month.

Yet the match against Newcastle is likely to come too soon.

Casemiro

United have seen the best of Casemiro ever since his blockbuster summer arrival from Real Madrid.

However, the Brazil international is currently serving a four-match ban following a red card against Southampton last month.

It was the second time the midfielder has been dismissed, with Fred and Marcel Sabitzer expected to partner up in his absence.

Casemiro wasn’t involved in United’s 3-1 FA Cup win over Fulham before the international break.

As well as Newcastle, he’ll be absent for upcoming games against Brentford and Everton as well.

Alejandro Garnacho

Alejandro Garnacho is another player on the sidelines and, though United haven’t confirmed a return date, the player himself recently confirmed on social media he would be out for the foreseeable future.

“It is difficult to put into words how I’m feeling right now,” he said.

“Unfortunately I will not be able to help my team and team-mates in the upcoming games in what is a very important part of the season for us at Manchester United.

“I am disappointed to also miss the opportunity to be with my team-mates of the Argentinian National Team in what would have been a great and proud moment for me and my family.

“This is part of football and our profession, however, I am already focused in my recovery.”

Tom Heaton

Tom Heaton also recently took to social media to confirm he’d suffered an injury that would rule him out of Sunday’s game with Newcastle.

“Unfortunately the day before the Fulham game I rolled my ankle in training,” he said.

“Thankfully, it’s not too bad but it’ll mean a couple of weeks out, I think. I should be back some point in April somewhere, hopefully halfway through.

“It’s an occupational hazard, unfortunately, a bit of a random one but, yeah, I just went over on the ankle and nicked the ligament.

“I’m in this [protective boot] for another few days then hope to get it back moving again.”
