Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag has six changes to make for Crystal Palace clash

Erik ten Hag reviews Man Utd's win against Burnley

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag may feel that he has the perfect opportunity to rotate his pack for the upcoming Carabao Cup third-round tie with Crystal Palace. Tuesday’s meeting is intriguingly the first of a double-header against Roy Hodgson’s side, with the second of two Old Trafford meetings coming a few days later in the Premier League.

But amid an injury crisis that has seen several of Ten Hag’s key men sidelined, he will be desperate not to avoid any more fitness issues. And he could rest some of United’s top stars and give them a full week of rest after the recent 1-0 win away to Burnley that saw the Red Devils avoid defeat for the first time in nearly a month.

In goal, Altay Bayindir could make his debut for the club after joining from Fenerbahce to replace the outgoing Dean Henderson this summer. He has been highly-rated coming out of Turkey and Tuesday’s cup game could be a good opportunity for him to put some pressure on Andre Onana after a wobbly start to his United career.

Despite his impressive performance against Burnley, it remains to be seen whether Jonny Evans at 35 can play two games in such quick succession. Raphael Varane could continue his comeback alongside Victor Lindelof, with the timeline on Lisandro Martinez’s return unclear after Ten Hag confirmed that the Argentinian alongside Harry Maguire sat out the trip to Burnley through injuries.

In midfield, Casemiro could be handed a rare rest with Ten Hag likely eager to keep him fit. Christian Eriksen may be drafted in to control possession in a game where the hosts are expected to dominate the majority of the ball.

Hannibal Mejbri impressed and he or Scott McTominay could stay in the team, but one of the midfielders may see themselves come out of the team in place of Facundo Pellistri in order for the Uruguayan to get another chance in a home game – which would allow the ever-present Bruno Fernandes the opportunity to return to a central position.

Alejandro Garnacho has been the forgotten man in recent weeks but he has the chance to showcase his immense talent, while Ten Hag can take talisman Marcus Rashford out of the team and ensure he has a full week to prepare for the coming league contest with Palace.

Up front, Ten Hag may want to ensure that Rasmus Hojlund does not suffer a reoccurrence of the injury that delayed his debut for the club. Anthony Martial could come in for a rare start as he is likely in last chance saloon and prove he can challenge Hojlund at Old Trafford – with his contract up in the summer.

Starting XI vs Burnley: Onana; Dalot, Lindelof, Evans, Reguilon; Casemiro, McTominay; Fernandes, Hannibal, Rashford; Hojlund.

Potential starting XI vs Palace: Bayindir; Dalot, Varane, Lindelof, Reguilon; Eriksen, McTominay; Pellistri, Fernandes, Garnacho; Martial.
