Man Utd boss Erik Ten Hag aimed dig at Liverpool during verdict of Klopp’s side

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag once took aim at Liverpool ahead of a Champions League game.

Ahead of a European encounter between the two clubs in 2020, the Dutchman, 52, made some comments about Jurgen Klopp’s men, saying that they were no longer ‘fallible.’ In a press conference ahead of the group stage game, the newly-installed Red Devils boss mentioned the then-reigning Premier League champions' 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa and how it showed they had signs of weakness.

He said: “In that match against Aston Villa, four goals via a rebound or via a deflection. So very unfortunate. But where they were infallible for a long time last year, they are not now. We too have principles. The players know those and the team is in good shape”.

Ten Hag's club succumbed to 1-0 defeats in both of their group stage games against United as they finished in third-place, behind Atalanta, and dropped into the Europa League. In the same year, Ten Hag led Ajax to another Eredivisie and the KNVB Cup.

On Thursday, United confirmed that the 52-year-old would be joining the club at the end of the season and taking over from interim boss Ralf Rangnick. Ten Hag agreed to a three-year deal with an option of an additional year, with United paying Ajax compensation to release the former Go Ahead Eagles man from his contract.

Ten Hag has so far won two Eredivisie and two cup doubles during his time at Ajax. Hope among United supporters is that he can lead them back to silverware after going without a trophy since 2017.

Via the club’s official site, United football director John Murtough said: “During the past four years at Ajax, Erik has proved himself to be one of the most exciting and successful coaches in Europe, renowned for his team’s attractive, attacking football and commitment to youth.

“In our conversations with Erik leading up to this appointment, we were deeply impressed with his long-term vision for returning Manchester United to the level we want to be competing at, and his drive and determination to achieve that.

“We wish Erik the best of luck as he focuses on achieving a successful end to the season at Ajax and look forward to welcoming him to Manchester United this summer.”
