Man Utd believe current crisis ‘down to Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer request’

There is a growing feeling at Manchester United that Cristiano Ronaldo is to blame for their current crisis, according to reports.

Ronaldo made his intention to leave Old Trafford clear earlier in the summer before returning towards the end of pre-season. The 37-year-old missed the squad's tour of Thailand and Australia, when morale was good.

BBC claim that since he's been back, negative feelings have creeped in again, leaving senior officials concerned at the stark contrast between before and after. And that's why Erik ten Hag, chief executive Richard Arnold and football director John Murtough are now considering his exit.

They are said to be fearful that United's problems won't improve until five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo is gone, because his attitude is bringing the overall mood down.

Some at the club feel that even if they don't find a replacement for him before the end of the transfer window, they'd still be better off getting rid. Former player Gary Neville believes that wouldn't be the case, though.

Speaking on Sky Sports on Monday (August 15), he said: "There is a massive decision to make on Ronaldo. He is obviously not happy, the problem is if they lose him there is nothing left in the goalscoring part of the pitch.

"I genuinely think if he leaves and they don't bring people in they could finish bottom half of the table. That's a bottom half of the table team, that's a massive statement."

Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes was unable to find a club willing to sign him from United. But the Red Devils could just terminate his contract, which has one year left to run.

He and Ten Hag ignored each other following the 4-0 defeat to Brentford at the weekend, while he is said to be eating alone in the club canteen.
