Man Utd are ‘overpaying’ for Rasmus Hojlund as Erik ten Hag faces awkward repeat

Manchester United have been told they are overpaying for Rasmus Hojlund. Former Tottenham star Jamie O’Hara claims Erik ten Hag could face an awkward transfer repeat with the Denmark striker.

Transfer update: Man United close in on Rasmus Hojlund deal

Hojlund is set to complete a £72million move to Old Trafford. A fee was agreed with Atalanta over the weekend as Ten Hag finally closes in on a new frontman.

The 20-year-old has only had one season in Italy, scoring nine goals in 32 Serie A appearances. But United have clearly seen enough to splash out a large fee on him.

O’Hara has heard good things about Hojlund but is wary of the cost of the deal. The pundit has compared the signing to that of Antony last year, who cost £85m but had a disappointing first season at Old Trafford where he registered just eight goals and three assists in all competitions.

O’Hara told Grosvenor Sport: “It’s a lot of money, isn’t it? But he’s a young lad, he looks powerful and is meant to be a bit of a wonderkid.

“The jury will be out of course because this is what Manchester United do – they signed Antony for big bucks last season and he was average, so I’m not expecting anything massive from them, but [Hojlund] does look like a top player who knows how to score goals.”

O’Hara says it is common practice for United to overpay for signings and says that is no different with Hojlund. Ten Hag will be hoping Hojlund can hit the ground running quicker in England than Antony did to avoid an awkward transfer repeat.

O’Hara added: “Manchester United always overpay for players. It’s Manchester United – they’re one of the richest clubs and biggest clubs in the world, so they’re always overpaying for players.

“That’s just how it’s always been. If young players are available and Man United want to sign them, the clubs are going to say, ‘yep, £80m’, because that’s just the going rate for these players now from abroad who are meant to be these wonderkids.

“If Man United want you, then your price tag is going to be high. I feel like that’s what the club are trying to do now – bring in all this young talent.

“We’ve seen it with Jadon Sancho and Antony and it just hasn’t worked out yet, so we’ll see. I think Erik ten Hag knows what he’s doing though.”
