Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City are all set to battle it out for Erling Haaland this summer, but face difficulties after Barcelona’s latest decision regarding Lionel Messi, reports suggest.
Barcelona officials have apparently made the decision to focus all their attention on Haaland this summer.
The Spanish giants are interested in the Norwegian wonderkid, but are £1billion in debt.
And as a result, the Catalans have decided they’ll sacrifice Messi in order to fund a move for the Borussia Dortmund ace, reports claim.
Barcelona are still yet to agree terms with Messi over a new contract, with the six-time Ballon d’Or winner set to become a free agent this summer.
The Argentine’s contract expires on July 1st, and reports suggest he’s been offered a whopping ten-year contract.
That contract involves him going out to play in Major League Soccer before returning in a backroom role.
But the contract he’s been offered would apparently involve him halving his wages, and it seems Barca are willing to let him go in order to get Haaland.
Club officials at the Nou Camp believe they’ll only get the chance to sign Haaland once, reports The Sun.
Chelsea, along with Manchesters United and City are desperate to sign the striker, but will no doubt view Barca’s latest decision as a blow to their chances.
Haaland’s agent Mino Raiola and father Alf-Inge Haaland both met with Barcelona officials earlier in the year to discuss a deal.
And afterwards, it was reported that the Norwegian was leaning towards moving to Spain.
Dortmund are expected to ask for at least £130million for Haaland this summer.
However, a bidding war would likely see his price go upwards of £150m.
And Barca have reportedly decided that signing Haaland will be their priority this summer, ahead of convincing Messi to sign a new contract.
The Sun explains that Haaland’s contract at Barcelona would likely be spread over five years, allowing them to spread the cost of the deal.
And the two clubs have apparently already made contact over a potential move for the striker.
