Man Utd and Bruno Fernandes equal Premier League records after Southampton draw
Manchester United and Bruno Fernandes equalled Premier League records after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side drew 1-1 with Southampton on Sunday.
Mason Greenwood’s second-half goal cancelled out Che Adams’ first-half opener at St Mary’s and earned the Red Devils a point.
The draw sees Manchester United equal Arsenal’s record for the most consecutive unbeaten away matches in the English top-flight with 27.
Following the 1-1 draw on the south coast, Portugal international Fernandes has also equalled Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus’ record for the most away games unbeaten at the start of a Premier League career with 26.
Manchester United have taken four points from their first two Premier League matches and are currently fourth in the table.
Red Devils goalscorer Greenwood said: ‘We’ve done well [to equal the record].
‘It’s hard coming away from home to play at these away grounds and with the fans back today it makes a difference but hopefully we can go onto the next game and win.’
Solskjaer’s side thrashed Leeds United 5-1 on the opening weekend and almost took an early lead over Southampton when Harry Maguire’s mistimed shot hit the top of the bar and Anthony Martial’s follow-up header was cleared off the line.
Paul Pogba was brilliant during the Leeds win, creating four assists, and should have put United ahead against the Saints but could only head over from close-range.
Southampton also threatened, however, with £15m summer signing Adam Armstrong curling an effort wide midway through the first half.
The hosts went ahead just minutes later after Che Adams’ strike deflected off Manchester United midfielder Fred and snuck past David de Gea.
Southampton, bolstered by the return of fans to St Mary’s, led 1-0 at half-time but Greenwood scored his second goal of the season after the break to equalise.
Despite seeing their lead disappear, the Saints rallied and should have reclaimed the advantage when Armstrong raced through on goal, but the former Blackburn Rovers star was denied by De Gea.
‘It was a difficult game, Southampton defended well but in my eyes we dropped two points.
‘When we got the equaliser we should have gone for the throats, the time went away and we did not get the winner towards the end.
‘Paul Pogba is an excellent player and he helped with the goal, he is a clever player and we are glad to have him here. It is a good squad and excellent for players to be fighting for their place.’
