Man Utd ‘already started Harry Kane hunt’ as Tottenham set price

Kane can absolutely win a trophy at Spurs, says Levy

Manchester United have already started their pursuit of Tottenham striker Harry Kane as they look to sign the forward in this summer’s transfer window, reports claim. The England international has been a shining light amid yet another poor campaign in north London. Any deal won’t be cheap, however, with Daniel Levy wanting at least around £100million to consider letting the 29-year-old go.

According to The Telegraph, United have ‘started to make attempts to find out what it will take to sign Kane’ amid an expectancy he’ll leave Tottenham this summer.

The forward has continued to produce the goods in front of goal for Spurs, despite another turbulent campaign in the capital. And United are looking at ways to land the 29-year-old now in the hope of striking an early transfer deal.

Kane’s current contract is due to expire in 2024 and, though Tottenham would love for their talisman to stay, that doesn’t appear feasible right now.

Sources within the club believe there is ‘little chance’ of the England international putting pen to paper on yet another renewal – despite his clear love for his boyhood team.

United are wary of dealing with Tottenham supremo Levy, who has refused to do business with the club since selling Dimitar Berbatov to the Red Devils back in 2008.

Luka Modric, Gareth Bale, Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier have all been prevented from swapping north London for Old Trafford over the past decade or so.

Yet United are doing their work behind the scenes to ensure they can sign Kane and make him the focal point of their attack.

Time is of the essence is their eyes, however. United don’t want their pursuit of Kane to last all summer, like it did with Berbatov nearly 15 years ago.

And should they struggle to make an early breakthrough, they’re willing to look at other targets on their shortlist.

Victor Osimhen is highly-rated behind the scenes, having propelled Napoli to the cusp of the Serie A title with his performances this season.

United are keen to give themselves time to switch back to the Nigeria international if their pursuit of Kane fails.

Levy would accept an offer in the region of £80m for his talisman should teams from abroad pursue Kane, with Bayern Munich interested.

Yet that price would rise to nearer £100m for United and other English teams due to Tottenham’s reluctance to sell to a Premier League rival.

The mood at Tottenham is currently a bad one with their season going from bad to worse.

Spurs sacked Antonio Conte at the end of last month and made Cristian Stellini interim boss in the hope he could get the club fully firing.

But that hasn’t happened, with Tottenham falling to recent defeats against the likes of Bournemouth and Newcastle.

They could even slip further down the Premier League standings with Aston Villa, Liverpool and Brighton also hoping to qualify for Europe next season.

And whether Tottenham do end up letting Kane go remains to be seen.

Speaking earlier this season, meanwhile, former United and Tottenham star Teddy Sheringham called on the Red Devils to ‘break the bank’ for Kane.

“They’ve not really got a proper centre-forward, have they?” he said. “Ten Hag has got one of the hardest jobs in world football at the moment.

“He’s come in at United and is trying to get them all rowing in the same direction, but without a recognised centre-forward up there leading the line and scoring the goals I think he’ll find it difficult.”

He added: “If they’re going to go out and break the bank for someone, go out and get Harry Kane. He’s the type of centre-forward they lack, a proper professional, he leads the line and you’ll always get 100 per cent out of him.

“He’s a proper player, so go break the bank for him. I know that’s going to upset the Tottenham fans but we’re talking about Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in the world.”
