Man Utd add two new targets to shortlist as Erik ten Hag ‘can’t afford Onana’

Manchester United have reportedly drawn up a contingency plan in case they’re priced out of a move for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana. The Cameroon international is Erik ten Hag’s undisputed top transfer target when it comes to signing a new No.1 but his steep valuation is beginning to cause the Old Trafford hierarchy problems as they continue to combat Financial Fair Play.

United’s director of football operations David Harrison was said to be in Ibiza on Friday to meet with Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio to discuss a deal but it seems as though the Red Devils are still facing an uphill battle to land the player.

A first bid is under discussions and reports within the Italian media suggest Inter are seeking £50million to strike an agreement.

However, The Mirror are now suggesting otherwise and even go as far as saying United have opted to walk away from the negotiating table.

As Inter continue to demand a premium, United have supposedly been left with no other option but to pursue cheaper alternatives.

Their shortlist now reportedly includes Feyenoord’s Justin Bijlow and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Kevin Trapp as they seek to bolster their goalkeeping department.

Bijlow played 25 times in the Eredivisie for Feyenoord last season as Arne Slot’s side edges PSV and Ajax to the title in Holland.

United could now look to launch a swoop for the Dutch international who would be available for a snip in comparison to Onana.

Meanwhile, Trapp is a player that has been of admiration at Old Trafford for quite some time following his exploits with Paris Saint-Germain and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Speaking last August, Trapp published an official statement in which he confirmed he had rejected a formal offer from United in favour of staying in Germany.

Trapp said: “Dear fans, there have been a lot of reports of interest in Manchester United in the past few days.

“It is true that there is a written offer. Manchester United is a world club and the fact that I can deal with and think about such an offer, I hope everyone understands.

“Yesterday, however, I informed the person in charge of both clubs that I had chosen Eintracht. I have experienced unforgettable things here with Frankfurt and we made history together. The start to the season has been bumpy, but I have absolute faith in us.”

The 32-year-old Germany international helped Eintracht win the Europa League in 2022 and has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga since returning to his homeland in 2018 following a four-year stint with PSG.

David de Gea’s future remains up for debate with the Spaniard set to hold crunch talks over his United future when he returns to England in the near future.

De Gea had verbally agreed a new contract at Old Trafford but the proposal has now been taken off the table by United.

Clubs from Saudi Arabia remain interested in the former Atletico Madrid shot-stopper but he is thought to favour staying at Old Trafford if possible.

Elsewhere, Ten Hag has refused to sanction Tom Heaton’s departure from Luton as the Hatters launched a move for the veteran goalkeeper.
