Man United's Wout Weghorst is desperate to end his wait for a trophy
‘I haven’t won any prizes in my career – hopefully this will be the first one’: Wout Weghorst is desperate to end his wait for a trophy in the Carabao Cup final as the Man United striker sweats on a place in Erik ten Hag’s line-up at Wembley
- Wout Weghorst is looking to win the first trophy of his professional career
- The 30-year-old signed for Manchester United on a short-term loan in January
- Weghorst only has one United goal but is hoping to make an impact at Wembley
Wout Weghorst is sure the goals will start flowing for him at Manchester United as he sweats on a place in today’s Carabao Cup Final.
Weghorst has scored just once in 11 games since being signed on loan as a short-term replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo and was substituted at half-time in Thursday’s Europa League win against Barcelona with replacement Antony going on to score the winner.
‘I want to be successful but I also want to score. It’s a double thing,’ admitted the Dutch World Cup striker, who was relegated last season with Burnley before playing in the Turkish League in the first half of this season.
‘For sure, it’s important to score and I know I’m capable of it because I’ve done it my whole career. Hopefully the chances will continue and then it’s up to me to finish them.
‘It is what it is but the most important thing is that what I do benefits the club in winning games.’

Ironically, Weghorst’s only strike so far came in the Carabao Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest – something that could be an omen against Newcastle.
‘We are in a good moment and I’m really looking forward to it. It’s a big match for us at a time when we’ve got a lot of big matches,’ said the 30-year-old.
‘There would be no better moment or better place than to score at Wembley. I’ve never played there or even been there before.
‘It’s some transformation from Burnley a year ago. It is a big difference though the circumstances are ultimately the same in trying to win football matches.
‘Manchester United will want to win just as much as Newcastle. It’s six years since we won a trophy which is too long for such a big club. I haven’t won any prizes in my career – hopefully this will be the first one.’
