Man United's 'disgraceful' defeat is 'stars' fault', says Lee Dixon

Man United’s ‘not good enough’ stars are called out by Lee Dixon as he insists ‘disgraceful’ Brentford defeat is ‘THEIR fault’… while Tim Howard and Robbie Earle agree Erik ten Hag needs ‘YEARS’ to fix the rock-bottom club

  • Manchester United suffered their second defeat of the Premier League season
  • The Red Devils were 4-0 down against Brentford within 35 minutes on Saturday
  • Lee Dixon claimed United’s woeful stars have to stop blaming the manager
  • Robbie Earle and Tim Howard agreed that Erik ten Hag needs years to fix the side

Lee Dixon claimed Manchester United players ‘need to be responsible’ for their disgraceful performance as he slammed the woeful side’s experienced stars for ‘going through the motions’.

The Red Devils’ nightmare start to the Premier League season continued on Saturday with their second successive defeat.

United found themselves 4-0 down after 35 minutes at the Brentford Community Stadium after a stunning first-half display from the hosts.

Manchester United’s experienced stars for ‘going through the motions’ by Lee Dixon

Dixon was scathing of United’s error-ridden display branding it ‘disgraceful’ and ‘terrible’ as he insisted they were not doing their job.

‘You don’t play for Manchester United out of luck,’ he said on NBC. ‘You get recruited, you get through the system, you get the opportunity to play for one of the biggest teams in the world. And with that opportunity you have to take it.

‘We all play badly, we all have bad games. But to start looking at Ten Hag now and asking how’s he gonna fix this, forget him for a minute, forget the club for a minute, you’ve got to look at the players, you’ve got to look at them individually and what’s going on out there.

NBC commentator Dixon was scathing of United’s error-ridden display branding it ‘disgraceful’

‘The mistakes that are going on, the lack of effort that’s going on. They’re not doing their jobs. You look at the positions they get themselves into, effectively terrible. No organization.’

He slammed the players as he claimed the experienced stars are simply ‘going through the motions’ as they blamed the manager rather than their own performance.

He added: ‘They’ve got some seriously experienced players out there just going through the motions because they think they can’t fix it, they think it’s the manager’s fault. No it’s not, it’s their fault. They’re the players who go out.

Dixon insisted the woeful stars believe they cannot fix the problem as they blame the manager

‘Yes, tactics play a part in it but you have to be responsible for your own performance and that out there today was disgraceful. Some of them dropped their heads after the second goal went in. They’re not marking players, that sort of stuff.

‘So forget the manager, forget the club, look at the players. Start with individuals and that’s not good enough. Brilliant by Brentford by the way.’

Robbie Earle claimed Erik ten Hag needed years to be able to fix the problems at Old Trafford, while Tim Howard agreed, adding that the United boss had to stick to his principles amid the criticism he is likely to face this season.

‘Right now, this guy (Ten Hag) has to be given time,’ said Earle. ‘We’re not talking a few weeks or a few months. I’m talking three, four, maybe five years. And not only that, he has to have the support.

‘Right now at this football club there are players who aren’t good enough to play for Manchester United, so they need an overhaul, they need a reboot. This guy has got to be given time, this guy has got to be given the support.

‘What you see on a football pitch is always mirrored of how a club is running and Manchester United is a shambles at the moment. It’s an absolute shambles for such a big club.

‘We’re calling it this big club because of their Premier League history, because of what they have won, because of commercial deals, because of sponsorship. In terms of football, they’re mid average. They’re an average Premier League team when you see that on the football field.’

Robbie Earle insisted the club was a shambles and only an average team on the pitch

Howard echoed Earle’s claimed as he criticized the quality of players at the club.

‘Some of these players quality-wise aren’t good enough,’ he said. ‘How does he (Ten Hag) fix it? He stays strong.

‘He absolutely needs years to fix this and all the criticism is going to come his way now and in the next year because I don’t think the squad is good enough but he has to stay strong to his principles.’

However, Earle suggested Ten Hag’s Old Trafford rebuild could prove to be a challenge as United’s recent performances are far from enticing to the top prospects they hope to lure to Manchester.

He said: ‘And to add to that, the squad isn’t good enough so they need quality players. We saw the list of players they were after earlier.

‘Frenkie de Jong is a player they’re after whose quality will make them better. What do you think he’s thinking watching that? “Not for me.”‘

Amid the criticism of United, Howard praised Brentford for their well-deserved victory, highlighting the contrast in the two teams’ players as he insisted the Bees ‘understand what is expected of them’.

‘Brentford right now are everything United aren’t footballing wise,’ he said. ‘They recruit players really well. They have a good understanding of how to play.

‘They take losses of the chin, Thomas Frank talks about how they only have 24 hours to rue their losses and then they go again.

‘They work for each other, there’s a pattern of play. These players understand what is expected of them, even at Brentford football club.’
