Manchester United missed ‘big player’ Christian Eriksen during their goalless draw with Newcastle, claims Gary Neville as he says midfielder ‘glues the team together’

  • Manchester United were held to a 0-0 draw by Newcastle on Sunday
  • Christian Eriksen was a surprise absentee from the squad due to illness
  • The Red Devils ultimately missed his creativity as they were frustrated

Gary Neville believes Manchester United sorely missed Christian Eriksen during Sunday’s disappointing 0-0 draw with Newcastle at old Trafford.

It was a frustrating afternoon for Erik ten Hag’s men, who looked rather short of ideas going forward.

Eriksen missed the game due to illness and Neville thinks that played a big factor in the underwhelming display.

Eriksen missed the game due to illness and his absence was felt by the Red Devils

‘Eriksen didn’t play and it looked like they missed him,’ Neville said. ‘I think when they’ve been doing really well, apart from at City which are just a phenomenal team, Eriksen’s been a big player.

‘When he doesn’t play you maybe realise how big a player he is cos he connects and glues the team together.

‘He’s got that pass through the lines very quickly. He sees things, he looks over his shoulder, he’s scanning all the time. It’s Paul Scholes that told me that by the way.

‘I just felt the balance was wrong. It wasn’t quite the same fluidity without him in the team.’

United now sit fifth, three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea and 11 points short of league leaders Arsenal.
