Man United ‘make first move to sign Tottenham striker Harry Kane this summer’ – but Daniel Levy ‘could demand at least £100m’ to sell to a Premier League rival

  • Daniel Levy is expected to demand at least £100m to sell Kane to a rival club

Manchester United have reportedly made their first approach to Tottenham for Harry Kane as they set their sights on signing the striker this summer.

United are desperate to bolster their attack ahead of next season after Cristiano Ronaldo left the club in November, and have identified Kane as one of their key targets.

They are aware that negotiations with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy are likely to be tricky, and have made an early approach to gauge his position on potentially selling Kane, according to The Telegraph.

Kane has one year remaining on his Spurs contract, and it is understood that he is unlikely to extend his deal at the end of the season considering Tottenham’s current struggles.

Spurs were beaten 6-1 by Newcastle on Sunday and look set to miss out on next season’s Champions League, while they are without a permanent manager after sacking Antonio Conte last month.

United boss Erik ten Hag is keen to strengthen his attack this summer at Old Trafford

Levy previously turned down multiple offers from Manchester City for Kane in 2021, and he is expected to demand a substantial fee to even contemplate letting Kane leave this time around.

While it is believed he would be willing to let Kane move abroad for around £80m, Levy could seek at least £100m to allow the 29-year-old to join a Premier League rival.

Kane has made it clear in the past that he would like to chase down Alan Shearer’s record of 260 Premier League goals, suggesting that he would prefer to remain in England.

United are keen to find out exactly what Levy wants to ensure that they do not waste time this summer, and potentially miss out on alternative options such as Napoli’s Victor Osimhen.

The Red Devils travel to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday with the pressure mounting on Levy after Spurs’ capitulation at St James’ Park.

United sit six points above Tottenham heading into the game, although Erik ten Hag’s men have two games in hand on their opponents.

His team have also thrived in cup competitions this term, winning the Carabao Cup in February, while they have booked their place in June’s FA Cup final.

Levy recently insisted Kane could win silverware at Spurs, but the club have now gone 15 years without a trophy.

Meanwhile, United are back fighting for silverware and this could appeal to Kane.

Levy now faces the tricky decision over whether to potentially sell Kane to a direct rival this summer, or risk losing him for free next year.
