Manchester United could be drawn into a bidding war with Real Madrid the fight to win the signature of Inter Milan wing back Federico Dimarco, according to reports.
Erik ten Hag’s side have made bolstering their backline one of their summer priorities – along with securing a striker – with Napoli’s Kim Min-jae considered the No 1 defensive target by the club.
But United could yet mount a raid on Serie A after adding the Nerazzurri defender to their transfer wish list.
As per the Independent, despite United having a number of options in the position, Ten Hag is has had his interest piqued by the Champions League finalist, who has impressed on duty for Simone Inzaghi’s side during the last campaign.
The 25-year-old won his place in the starting XI after two loan spells further to his 2018 move to the San Siro, at Parma and Hellas Verona, but during the 2022-23 campaign became a trusted lieutenant of Inzaghi’s team, notching up 47 appearances for the Milanese side across all competitions.
Federico Dimarco has attracted interest from a number of top flight clubs including Man United and Real Madrid
Erik ten Hag has long had plans to revamp his side’s backline during this summer’s window
As well as making up Inter’s defensive bedrock, Dimarco made hay at the other end of the pitch too, registering 15 goal contributions as Inter competed on all fronts.
As a result, a number of top flight clubs have eyed the defender, but United and Real Madrid are viewed the most seriously by Inter.
Ten Hag is believed to be interested not only in Dimarco’s affordability – in contrast to United targets such as Harry Kane, Victor Osimhen, and Declan Rice – but his versatility in defence.
The Dutch manager is believed to be keen to try the Italy international in a variety of different roles, despite Dimarco most regularly starting a left back at the Serie A outfit.
Ten Hag is also said to be interested in moving current left back Luke Shaw closer to centre half in a build to boost the flexibility and versatility of his side ahead of next season’s European and domestic challenges.
Other defensive targets that the former Ajax manager is reportedly considering including Monaco’s Axel Disasi, and Robin Koch, who was relegated at the end of the season with Leeds.
Real Madrid’s interest in Dimarco is rather more surprising, after club president Florentino Perez declared their club’s summer business complete upon the short-term signing of former Newcastle striker Joselu.

Los Blancos previously signed their former academy graduate Fran Garcia from Rayo Vallecano, and in a landmark move, paid £113m to secure the services of Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund.
United are yet to sign any players in this transfer window, after the club was stymied in their speedy pursuit of Chelsea’s Mason Mount.
The club is believed to have agreed personal terms with the 24-year-old midfielder and has made an opening offer to the west London club.
But there is a significant chasm between the two sides’ valuation of the player – United opening offer for the player is believed to have been £40m, whilst Chelsea wish to see their two-time Player of the Year sold for close to £80m.
